Making myself accountable for being more productive. Trying to consider which of my prototypes I want to focus on for the next few months and make it into a fully realized game.

Prototypes include the following:

1.) Platformer - Rival faerie-folk engaged in a game of cat & mouse with environmental repercussions on the line.

2.) Platformer - Dedicated to a well-known comedy character following chapters of his titular movie.

3.) FVS - Fixed Vertical Shooter styled after Galaga, Phoenix, and other games from the classic arcade era.

I have a treasure chest of other ideas that are only partially realized and in need of initial development, while these three have more effort already put in. I will try and settle on one by the end of the week while trying to balance all my other duties; we have a big event happening on Friday/Saturday so that will certainly be the bulk of my attention & energy for now.

Hello hello!

I've recently discovered that @samhocevar had made a small tool (midi2pico8) to use MIDI controllers with the PICO-8 tracker. I've iterated on it for my personal use and thought it might be worth sharing to the community. I hope it can be of use to some people!

So here it is:


midi2pico8dx

Midi2pico8dx is a small commandline utility that maps MIDI input to keyboard keys for use in PICO-8.

  • Bind keys, buttons and knobs to keyboard inputs!
  • A single json config file to simply create or edit key bindings!
  • The config file supports profiles. Have different bindings for all your MIDI controllers!
  • MIDI controller auto detection & profile auto selection!

Carrot Up is a cute shmup!

🥕 you're a carrot in a bunny's dream
🐰 satisfy hungry bunnies by throwing carrot tops at them
💥 beware! If you don't feed them fast enough, they'll come bite you and throw dust bunnies at you
🧃 collect juice boxes and choose between restoring HP or making a big spread shot of baby carrots (bunny satisfaction guaranteed)

Controls

  • use arrows to move
  • use X to shoot carrot tops
  • use Z to spread-shoot baby carrots
  • use P or enter to pause

Juice Boxes

Collect carrot juice boxes and use z to shoot carrot babies! The more boxes you save, the more baby carrots your spread shot will contain. Or collect up to 5 boxes to restore one health - if you have all your HP, collecting 5 boxes will grant you extra points! ✨

Request: Have the output of TRACE tell you tab and line number within the tab. Presently it tells line number from the beginning of the entire file.

I use TRACE, and I also use tabs in the editor.

Is there a way to get tab-based line numbers in the output of TRACE? otherwise the line numbers in the output are not so useful.

Here is my code:

i cant program like i normally do anymore and its messing with my brain HOW DO I FIX THIS????

to be more specific, pressing arrow keys selects text, rather than just moving the cornel, so you cant type "print()" as a base, because then when you try to type inside of it, it replaces the end parentheses with the contents you type in, aka, the main way i program is broken, AND I CANT FIX IT PLS FREE ME FROM THIS PSYCOLOGICAL TORTURE

I want to write a post on a PICO-8 color study I did about a year ago. I think it has potential to help PICO-8 artists new and seasoned. I'm not an art student or a journal writer, I just want to write a post about my discovery, but I'm poor at writing walkthroughs.

On a rather shitty day in August 2024, the world changed forever. Mankind was invaded and completely annihilated by alien invaders from outer space. To make matters worse, Antonette was on the verge of winning for the first time at her regular bingo night. As everyone around her turned into particles, she not only survived, but evolved into something more powerful and angry. So she turned her wrath on the invaders who had killed all her friends and rained on her bingo parade.

And It's Over is a single level bullet hell shmup with a nod to bonus letters from a bygone era. Back in the day, you could master arcade games by collecting the word "bonus" to get a higher score. It also features a bingo game mechanic using the bonus letters to unlock over 16 alternative color schemes.

Gravity Popper is a dynamic arcade-style game where you launch balls to destroy enemies while dealing with gravity effects and physics. Your goal is to eliminate as many enemies as possible without losing all your lives.

How to Play:

  1. Aim the Ball:

    • Use the controls to adjust the launch angle and speed of the ball.
    • Aim carefully to hit the enemies with maximum impact.
  2. Launch the Ball:

    • Press the launch button to send the ball flying towards the enemies.
    • The ball will move according to the angle and speed set, following a parabolic path influenced by gravity.
  3. Destroy Enemies:
    • The ball can destroy enemies by colliding with them.

Hey all,

I'm noticing a slight audio delay when using the native app for Linux, as well as the raspberry pi version (on a Linux handheld). This delay is not present on the web player. I've tested a few games with the same results. I notice it in the boot up sequence as well, so it seems to be a global issue. Is this expected behavior? It's not game breaking, but it's noticeable. Thanks.

I'm running the Linux version on a Chromebook - no other apps have audio lag.
I'm running the Pi version with Knulli on an Anbernic RG35XX plus.

One optional theme is Peaceful, you'll find no fight, no lost life, no gameover, you just have to find your mom. It's a little very tiny platformer which will take you a few minutes to complete.

Instructions

You play the game by selecting actions to either move your units (colored squares representing armies) around the board or to research upgrades to try to get the most victory points before either you or the opponent fulfill one of the following:

  • 6 units of one color are in play
  • research level 5 is reached
  • tower level 6 is reached

Action Area

In this area you select what action you want to do on your turn. You select different actions by using ▲ or ▼ and selecting with the Z/O key. You can press ◀ or ▶ to move to other menus.

HOW TO PLAY

There's some alien invasion or something (idk make a head canon you can do it) and you need to drive over them.
Hit enemies and avoid the bullets fired in order to progress through the endless wave system (well it actually crashes at around 5000 i think), which introduces unique enemies with different patterns to learn.
Chain hitting your enemies in either a fast pace or through a drift in order to mantain a combo and score big. Do note that combos go away quickly in this game, and only go up to x8.
If you got hit 3 times, you fail, but you regain 1hp at the end of each wave, and if you and a wave with full health, you get a free 50pts!
