i somehow accidentally turned on an fps counter and thought the manual would say how to turn it back off, but it doesn't seem to. it would be nice if the manual documented this and any other potentially undocumented shortcuts

(i managed to get it to turn off by closing and relaunching pico-8)

Splore is already a fantastic feature of pico8 for discovering and sharing games, but now that we can run pico-8 in quite a few handheld devices (gameshell, tinypi, etc), I feel like there are some features that could improve the user experience greatly, so here's my wishlist of features I would like to see added, feel free to contribute!

  • Option for removing categories (jam,wip,search,local,etc):
    -- ideally this would be configurable in the config.txt file.
    -- even better if there was a somewhat hidden gui administrator of some sort.
  • Add optional "last played" and "most played" categories.
  • Reordering games in favorites.
  • Somehow allow searching using just the d-pad and buttons (actually works with gamepads, not some remapped keyboards, arcade cabs, gameshell).
  • Easy access to games from the same creator of the current cart (Included in 0.1.2, yay Zep!).
  • Slideshow/Screensaver option: take games from favorites, randomly launch them for a few seconds each, if there's any input go back to Splore.

At the beginning of their draw cycle some carts use

cls()
rectfill(0,0,127,127,color)

instead of

cls(color)

Is that for performance reasons? Does it perform better if you call rectfill with your background color? Or is it because the color option for cls was introduced in a later version of pico-8?

Game made for a school project, it's the adaptation of poem of Arthur Rimbaud called "Ophelie" , Graphism are made by Tyspoo.

Original poem :
I

On the calm black water where the stars are sleeping
White Ophelia floats like a great lily;
Floats very slowly, lying in her long veils...

  • In the far-off woods you can hear them sound the mort.

For more than a thousand years sad Ophelia
Has passed, a white phantom, down the long black river.
For more than a thousand years her sweet madness
Has murmured its ballad to the evening breeze.

The wind kisses her breasts and unfolds in a wreath
Her great veils rising and falling with the waters;
The shivering willows weep on her shoulder,
The rushes lean over her wide, dreaming brow.

The ruffled water-lilies are sighing around her;
At times she rouses, in a slumbering alder,
Some nest from which escapes a small rustle of wings;

  • A mysterious anthem falls from the golden stars.

II

O pale Ophelia! beautiful as snow!
Yes child, you died, carried off by a river!

  • It was the winds descending from the great mountains of Norway
    That spoke to you in low voices of better freedom.

It was a breath of wind, that, twisting your great hair,
Brought strange rumors to your dreaming mind;
It was your heart listening to the song of Nature
In the groans of the tree and the sighs of the nights;

It was the voice of mad seas, the great roar,
That shattered your child's heart, too human and too soft;
It was a handsome pale knight, a poor madman
Who one April morning sate mute at your knees!

Heaven! Love! Freedom! What a dream, oh poor crazed Girl!
You melted to him as snow does to a fire;
Your great visions strangled your words

  • And fearful Infinity terrified your blue eye!

III

  • And the poet says that by starlight
    You come seeking, in the night, the flowers that you picked
    And that he has seen on the water, lying in her long veils
    White Ophelia floating, like a great lily.

Arthur Rimbaud

I

Ses grands voiles bercés mollement par les eaux ;

Les nénuphars froissés soupirent autour d'elle ;

II

T'avaient parlé tout bas de l'âpre liberté ;

Dans les plaintes de l'arbre et les soupirs des nuits ;

Brisait ton sein d'enfant, trop humain et trop doux ;

    Tu viens chercher, la nuit, les fleurs que tu cueillis ;
    Et qu'il a vu sur l'eau, couchée en ses longs voiles,
    La blanche Ophélia flotter, comme un grand lys.

Arthur Rimbaud

Hello all,

I just purchased my PICO-8, and I knew it would be amazing, but I am more than amazed; I am BLOWN AWAY! PICO-8 has already exceeded my expectations in the few hours I've spent learning and fiddling with it.

I look forward to being a part of the PICO-8 community!

Cheers.

Arrow keys move Raymond's head, and [Z] shoots brainwaves.

Avoid fruitbats and thorns!

Your meal is complete when the food meter is full.

You are Raymond, the shortest member of a herd of Pearpickers. Unfortunately, you were born a runt and could never reach the pears. But one day, a scientist came to the plains to study your herd and took pity on you. He outfitted you with a robotic neck extension that allowed you to reach the highest, most prized pears!

Today is a day like any other. You have wandered into the woods to fill your belly before your afternoon nap. As always, you are careful to avoid the pesky fruitbats and poky thorns that make every meal an adventure...

While I continue my hiatus from working on silly-detailed platforming, I thought I'd workshop camera scrolling. I enjoy adventurey things, and using the camera to "hide" areas and enhance transitions has always felt good to me.

I could just use map flags and get per-tile camera control, though that might be more detailed map work than I want to do. (every boundary might need two lines of camera tiles: [main area]<->[reset]<->[show]<->[secret area] )

A little less involved would be minimap-scale flagging, which could be stored as an array, or just as pixels in an unused area of the sprite/map memory. (pixel per "screen", flagged for camera "edges" "corners" and "secrets") Tracking it this way might also be handy for music switching, atmospheric effect triggers, etc.

Now that I compare the two above techniques, per-tile flags might be nice to avoid getting stuck with screen resolution for secret area boundaries. Plus with a minimap scale, you're essentially adding a second fuzzy layer of tile-detection on top of any map tile checking already happening for collision and such.

Warning

This game contains flickering sprites, so be careful if you are prone to epileptic seizures.
There is an option in the menu to toggle flickering on or off if you need to.

This game also features a scrolling background which may cause motion sickness in some individuals.
This can also be disabled in the menu.

A basic WIP shmup inspired by Danmaku.
Apologies for the messy code; I'm not super familiar with LUA or Pico-8 yet.
Comments and criticism are welcome!

Mechanics

Focus

This game features a fairly standard FOCUS MODE, as seen in many shmups.
Basically you press the button and you shift most of your ship's power into its weapons, allowing you to fire a focused, more powerful beam at the cost of movement speed. FOCUS MODE also makes your hitbox more visible.

I just entered the basic uppercase Apple ][+ font in sprites and added a SFX that is the tone of the boot beep of the Apple ][. If this is exciting to you, use it in whatever project you want with a lil' credit in the comments.

I also added a few character I wish I'd had back then in spritesheet 1.

Initial running of the cart cuts off the beep. Reset the cart to hear it properly (hit Return and choose).

Enjoy!

Another Tetris clone, I know :P

I managed to squeeze in an extra mode, take a look if you want!

Why are you reading this, it's Tetris, you probably already know how it works

Anyways, this clone is guideline-compliant in large parts (except where the guideline is boring or confusing to me), including Standard Rotation System and kicks. It has a steep difficulty curve, and a lot of options to adjust gameplay, animations, or Tetromino sprites (I have 16 now!).

I implemented 9 different modes, and up to 3 highscores are automatically saved per mode (options are also automatically saved btw)

If that description was too [b]dry and boring
