A cart filled with all the music I could fit onto it. Feel free to use these tracks in your pico-8 games, here is a tutorial on how
I'm happy to say I'm finally releasing the album! It's up as a free download on Bandcamp, and I'll have it available to listen to as a Soundcloud playlist here.
Update July 2016: With the new changes to the audio system, the music sounds much better! (Thanks Zep!) I've re-exported the music and re-uploaded to Bandcamp.
Thanks to Dann Toliver for making the visualizer with me, to Gabby DaRienzo for design advice, and Andrew Carvalho for help with math. I'm not very good with math.
Also, thanks to Zep: PICO-8 logo property of Lexaloffle games, used with permission.
Old version/notes:
Thanks pizza! Means a lot coming from you. You've got some really cool stuff on here
Nice! I'm definitely getting some vibes and feels off all this.
Should we request a sub-forum for things that aren't exactly game related? Albums, of course, and maybe pixel art could be featured? Just throwing this out there.
But this is good stuff and inspirational. I'm feeling a powerful urge to lay down some trax.
Thanks!
Some sub-forums for cartridges would be cool.
One for games, one for music, one for things.
Thanks jbump! A music sub-forum would be a good idea. In the meantime, I promise not to flood you guys with music-only carts. I can start posting stuff to Soundcloud or bandcamp.
That is awesome. My favorites are Melancholy and Seaside Town. Remind me of something like Chrono Trigger...
I am working on a project where Hijinx and Missions fit well enough! Mind if try it?
Thanks betoraposa. Please do use them as you see fit! They are here to be used. Let me know if you need a hand with copying them over, though the tutorial should be fairly straightforward.
I appreciate the comparison to Chrono Trigger. My approach to composition has been very heavily influenced by 90's JRPGs, so it makes me really happy if you're hearing that.
Hi Robby, just to let you know I think I'm going to include one of these tracks in my game over here.
Thanks for making them available!
You said here that I may use these songs the way I see fit. However, are they all right in commercial use? I am making a game that I plan on not only licensing under the GPLv3 but also use commercially. (I might make my own arcade machine that had the game inside. I might also put up the game for free yet accept tips on PayPal or Patreon.) I want to make sure that this use of the music is all right with you before I upload the game with the music.
Working on a dance game project like mrh's. Any tips on composition, music-related code, and procedural screen effects like yours? Also, what SFX are you using for those nice crispy snares? Very impressive.
Also, spam music carts!! Especially with Splore, it's neat to have a cool music library on the go for when you're concieving stuff.
@mrh: Thanks! Looking forward to seeing more of your rhythm game! Very cool, happy to be included.
@Tinglar: I'm curious how you'll sell a pico-8 game, but if you can do it feel free. Just please credit me where possible, thanks. Go ahead and use the music, thanks for asking.
@TonyTheTGR: Sounds awesome. I got help with the screen effects from my friend Dann, so I'm afraid I'm not much help there. Feel free to check out the source of the cart and see how it's done though! I think all of my snares are sound channel, usually with a ramp down articulation applied.
Excellent music and I really dig the player interface. Thanks for your hard work and giving to the community!
I want to use some of the tracks in my upcoming game...and read how to take music/sfx from one cart to another, but how do I know which tracks use which sounds?
I haven't looked at the source yet but if there are 32 sfx rows total but Track 9 only needs 12 of them, I don't want to import all 32 (at least, I wouldn't think so)...but how do I figure that out easily?
Or maybe any chance you can post each track separately so it's easier to pull out of the source?
Okay, so I realized my problem was not knowing the tracker or how to read it. Spent some time with it and now I think I extracted things properly...I'll know soon enough. Thanks for the tracks. Your name will be in the credits.
@Robby Duguay
First off, thank you for giving me permission.
That being said, "selling" is not the exact term. The idea I have was that I would export my game to HTML5 then upload the exported game to my website, where people would play the game free of cost. I would earn money either through direct PayPal donations or monthly Patreon contributions.
Robby, I'm interested in the movie SNOW you wrote the soundtrack to. Could you please point me to it from IMDB ? I'm not finding it - thanks.
hi dw817 - Snow is on IMDB here.
The whole film is up for free on vimeo.
Thanks for checking out my work
Used the first song in this spin off https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=29882
Nice music, thank you :)
Hi RobbyDuguay!
Thanks for sharing your tunes!
I used the song "factory fresh" in my game: Random Dungeon
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=32299
Thank you!
Melancholy was used in my latest Game Jam (my first game with Pico-8!)
Great use of Pico-8's limitations. I included all of these songs as BGM for my word processor. https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=88489#p
Great work!
I included them in a rhythm game
https://jbernard3396.itch.io/rythm
I used your music in my Mastermind game:
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=99530#p
Thank you!
I think I will use your music called hijinx as the midboss of Ben's world.
How do you download the cart in a readable format to be able to copy the music? The only option I'm able to get is the .p8.png format.
EDIT: I figured it out, for anyone else new to this you just load the cart in pico-8 and then save it. A copy will be made.
Sounds great!
I will use Factory Refresh for my upcoming DropBlop game!
Thanks so much for sharing these. I'm going to use at least one in my WIP game and will credit you also.
Awsome! I'm sure some of these will end up in one of my games some day.
@sticky you can save the cart in text format by ending the filename with .p8
— not .png
or .p8.png
.
it won't have a thumbnail because it's a text file and not a picture. but because it's a text file and not a picture, you can copypaste data from/into it with any text editor.
Hey, this isn’t specifically about this cart, but I when I create my own cart from scratch, make some music and put it in the pattern tab accordingly, nothing plays when I run the cart. I put in only music(0) (the pattern 0 is the first one I use so it’s not a matter of accidentally skipping one). What am I doing wrong?
Hello Robby, I used 'The Mission' in https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=55165.
Best Regards!
Thanks for the great music. I used track 3 in my game lode runner.
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=45988
Thanks so much! Track 3 is a perfect fit for the cart I'm working on :D
Really good mix! I used "Out of Control" for my final boss music.
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=142926
Thanks for this great mix. I thankfully used the track "Arpument" in my first game: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=143267
