UPDATE 2019-12-16: For those wondering about the recent stall in new carts, we have managed to determine the issue with the recent delay in shipping -- please see this exclusive footage from our supposedly 'expert and professional' cart delivery service:
Ugh, that's gotta hurt! But with Unreliable Santa Pico Service, I guess you do get what you pay for..
Future shipping shall be covered by holiday delivery juggernaut, Shamazon. Their CEO, Jeff "Polar" Bearzos, has assured us they will not only take on the remaining orders, but fully intend to catch up to the projected release dates!
It's the Pico-8 Advent Calendar for 2019!
This is the main menu for a collaboration organized by a secret cabal of pico-8 merry makers.
Come back on each day from the 1st to the 25th of December for twenty-five different surprises, each made by a different developer! This menu cartridge will link to all of the games as they are released, though the individual cartridges will also have their own threads.
Day 1: UFO SANTA CANDY BLASTER
After an incident at Confection Production Facility 97, thousands of peppermints were launched into low earth orbit. Santa's UFO is tough enough to ram these without taking any damage, and a few solid hits with a gift will shatter these mints into dust. Better get cracking if you're going to deliver those gifts on time!
Smash candies, get coins, buy upgrades, and smash more! Buy out all the upgrades to complete a run... and for the ultimate challenge see if you can complete a run without allowing any candies to escape.
Head on over to the main thread for controls and more info: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=36074
This is such a nice little treat that I've enjoyed every year since discovering Pico-8 with my PocketChip.
DAY 4:
Remember the classic Shockwave Flash snowball fight game called Snowcraft from 1998? 21 years ago! My entry for this year's PICO-8 Advent Calendar is a demake of that beloved Flash game. Huge thanks to @Gruber for helping with the sound effects!
This game uses the mouse. (Sorry, mobile users!)
I tried to make this as close to the original as possible. Have fun! :)
For snowfight, is it just infinite bonus rounds or is there an ending?
@Celeste_Pro Infinite bonus rounds... just like the original. 😁
Hallo!
For DAY 5 here's Polar Panic!
Help our poor polar pal to survive through the bad times of climate change.
Hope you enjoy it!

For Saint Nicholas Day, I made a game inspired by my favorite St Nick legend: that one time he punched a heretic. It's a 2-player fighting game, controllers recommended. Enjoy!
@enargy, you might have an option to RESET so can open the squares again and see the cool animations you've done.
And just HOW do you plan to stuff 25 doors on this screen ? :D
Day 7 is just a little musical greeting card. (No preview cuz spoilers!) It's minimally interactive! Happy holidays!
Day 8 has just opened. A small musical doodle with an endlessly dancing Santa Claus. Enjoy!

Day 9 - Star Swing
Day 10 - Snow Plower
It's Christmas Day, and you're the only one working the snowplow today. Can you clear out all the snow?
Controls
ARROW KEYS to move your snowplow.
Z/C/N to select things in menus.
X/V/M to go back.
Hold X/V/M on the title screen to erase your progress (don't worry, you probably won't do it by accident!).
There are 100 levels to complete. Can you clear them all before seasonal depression kicks in?
Oh. I didn't realize a new page was an option for space, but it was kind of funny to just find it today.
Edit: Great Idea, btw
Hey nice project! Unfortunately I found out about this really late. Is it still possible to participate?
According to a conversation I had with @enargy (12/10/19), he said all the slots are filled:
hey dw! so we kind of have the days all planned out (and they're supposed to be hidden until the day of release) |
I'm reminded of the Star-Bellied Sneetches, but that's fine.
So ... not this year. Next year however should allow if you send it in early. I was wanting to add my Christmas Card cart with the animated snow and music as a cart to this Advent Calendar, but it'll have to be for next year I'm understanding.
I'll submit my Christmas cart January 2020 for December of 2020. Hopefully this will be permitted - and your cart might be too.
@enargy I hate to be rude, but the advent calendar appears to be behind by a few days. Why is that?
Well I wasn't going to say anything - but there ya go.
And you're right, @chungus_is_gay, it shouldn't be behind at all since all the carts are already written.
In any case our team is still working on a nice and new Christmas game but it shouldn't be much longer.
A few notes regarding comments by @chungus_is_gay and @dw817:
A fact of life with game dev is that things rarely go quite as planned. People aren't always able to complete things in the time windows they meant to. Accordingly, having people lined up to complete projects at certain times doesn't guarantee that they'll properly be ready by then. Life happens. While Enargy and the Advent Calendar folks have been working to make sure there's a steady stream of content for this, it's an unfortunate fact that not everything ends up ready for release in advance.
Also, I'd like to remind folks that this is an Advent Calendar, which by nature is supposed to be offering a new surprise every day and so directly tacking a pre-existing cart on goes against the whole point of it. Yes, at the moment the daily aspect has hit a snag, but the project is sticking true to its nature and more carts are coming.
Morning, @Jusiv. I'm getting there, starting with coffee ... reading ...
Okay, well this is confusing then. Because I was understanding from what @enargy wrote me that all the slots were filled and you're saying they are lined up =TO= complete, meaning these carts are not written yet.
But - that's fine. As you say, they ran into a problem. And while they can't accept mine or other people's carts like @Yesyoor to keep the flow going for the missing days, they will be releasing soon (we hope) carts to fill the remaining belated days.
You mentioned the cart must be a surprise. Well the one my team is working on is definitely a surprise as no-here has seen it or can see it until it is released. Our only deadline however is to release it before Christmas.
As you said the project is staying true to its form and more carts are coming. I am definitely looking forward to that.
Hey @dw817, apparently @enargy responded to the cart delay, but he didn't tell us why the delay was happening, he just told us that more carts would be out soon, which I'm kind of ticked about. However, I'm glad that he atleast acknowledged it instead of going "What do you mean, there's no delay here!".
Another day, another game. This one is all about following the rhythm and the indications your helper is showing to help you wrap as many gifts as possible following the beat!
The game unrolls in two phases: in the first one, your helper will show you a succession of arrows in a specific rhythm. In the second phase you have to press the arrows in the same order and rhythm than what the helper showed to you and wrap those gifts!
You can try hitting for the perfect, but it's fine if you can't, any present count! Do your best!
Ow, looks like you can't count on Santa to deliver the great new Pico-8 Holiday Carts, @enargy. Have you considered Fed-Ex ? :)
Nice to have you bring the games back, that's what is going to count for most of us. Glad you're safe and well.
Hi y'all! Today's game is Santa Panic by myself, with music by Gruber.
Comments and highscores are very welcome in the game's thread please! :)
