Here's my entry for ludum dare #38
All you have to do is taking the red flag on the opposite side of the island. If you success another flag will appear on the other side, and so on. Your time is refreshed each time you take a flag.
If you capture 2 / 5 / 10 / 15 flags you will unlock permanent skills.
If you reset the cart your skills and hi-score will be reset too.
commands are : <left> and <right> to run, <up> to jump and <up> again to explo-double-jump ( need unlock )

up to jump is never a good idea when 2 other buttons are unused(unless im not getting far enough for those powerups)

having to jump with your thumb that is already busy controlling the direction is way too frustrating.

Also a great little nugget of a game. However prob not as enjoyable as it has the potential to be. The size of the screen and the speed of the enemies can mean a lot of what feel like cheap deaths. For example the mischievous shark has killed me more than once because I had not enough time to react to it suddenly popping out from behind the notification of the stage change.
Piranhas and pangolins also killed me in similar ways.
Maybe smaller hitbox , slower enemy or screen scrolls a bit faster ahead of you?
The bomb jump costs time seems too cruel, especially if you get nailed with a bunch of screen extensions in a row. As the bomb jump also seems to be hair trigger and often goes off without or barely pressing the jump button. So that's bad.
But yeah , it's good'un
I'll be honest. I love this game, but I wish it reset your powerups every time. I like that first game experience where you're leveling up, but so is the island. It really feels like the difficulty curve is ramping with you.
Also, make a button do the jump. You can keep the Dpad as well if you like, both of them, but make the button jump.

what others have said about the jump button thing is definitely a good idea imo. today ive actually edited my copy of the cart to set X as jump, and found the game became even more enjoyable after that! here's a quick gif of the code change in case anyone else wants to do the same. you only have to change one btnp() call.
until i made this edit i'd only used btn(), so this was how i learned about btnp() and i'm stoked cos it's gonna make my own game a little better 💕

This game just feels so good! I keep coming back to it. I can even achieve the shield of the first go around at times. Love it.
This is great. Sometimes I get frustrated or annoyed, but that's because I care about it. I love this. Really cool idea.
It is really cool that this game has some elements such as mario like the care free pangolins resembling goombas and cannon thing resembles a bullet bill launcher I think it would be cool if this game got reskined to look like a mario game.
it doesn’t really make sense to change an original game with original art to be a pale copy of the most well-known game of the same genre! wouldn’t make it better, and there are also copyright/cease-and-desist issues
I wasnt saying to change the game I was saying that someone would take the game and reskin it also there are mario games on pico 8 so I dont think copyright would be a problem.
the fact that some games with mario skin already exist does not mean it’s ok. the more there are, the more likely nintendo may hear of them and take action.
But if you dont name the game "Mario" I think nintendo would have a very hard time finding the game also pico 8 is very limited so if something were to look like mario I doubt nintendo would ever hear about it and I only said "reskin" witch means only changing sprites not music.
When you make art there's a very real aspect of it's fine to make stuff based on other things you enjoy for fun, But this all the time is not 100% the healthiest thing. To me it's more of a ethics thing but I am probably giving way too much thought to a comment asking other people to do work

This is a great take on the jam theme, and a neat concept for a game, but the bomb jump is ruining it for me. It triggers way too easily. It's popping off constantly when I don't want it to. Feet one pixel off the edge of a brick as I'm running? Bomb jump. Landed on a rock and want to immediately launch again? Bomb jump. It's sucking the fun out of the game for me.
Awesome game. I love that you keep your upgrades. I love the bomb jump, too! (If only you could map the jump key to either action button.)
