These are an (unofficial) set of awards, similar to the Steam Awards, designed to celebrate PICO-8 carts.
The community nominated carts over the course of December, and voted on them over the course of January.
CLARIFICATION: For this set of awards, any existing cart could be nominated, no matter how old. As no PICO-8 awards events have been done before, it didn't seem fair to exclude any carts on the basis of age.
ALL OF THE WINNERS AND HONORABLE MENTIONS CAN BE PLAYED FROM THE AWARDS CART!
(One of them isn't on the BBS, so instead I've provided a popup with its URL.)

(Two categories have 3 honorable mentions instead of 2 because they had a tie for 3rd place.)
THE DETAILS
Cart nominations ended at 11:59PM Eastern Time on December 31, 2018.
Cart voting ended at 11:59PM Eastern Time on January 31, 2019.
Winners were announced on February 18, 2019. (I had to put it off for a bit to deal with college work.)
to clarify, we're only supposed to nominate carts that came out in 2018 right?
@tesselode Nope, ANY cart is fair game! Since this has never been done before I didn't think it would be fair to exclude older ones.
Vortex/Underrated: UHURA
Kelin's Delivery: Rain
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=29277
This one is very good, and doesn't seem to get a lot of attention. The system you use to make stuff is very well done and simple.
Probably should go for awards 4, 3, and 2.
Edit:
Tiny Sim
https://lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=3393
Found this one, and it is quite complicated at first, but also has an amazing number of details. This project is by not finished yet, so bear that in mind when you attempt a barrel roll and the outside 3d render doesn't roll over.
Award 1 here.
@hwd2002 You can only nominate one cart per award. Which one do you want to nominate for Underrated (Award #2)?
arggh okay I just submitted mine but this was too difficult to pick only 1 cart for each category when there are 4 years worth of carts to choose from!
What if (assuming this ends up being a recurring thing) we just vote on all years every time? That way it would be the same rules every time, and thus be more "fair", and we would have a chance to nominate our other choices in future years (and we'd just have to say a cart can't be nominated for a category it has already won). This would be similar to a "hall of fame" model like the one employed by the U.S. Library of Congress National Film Registry (where a film actually has to be at least 10 years old to be considered), versus an "Oscars" model where only the previous year is considered. I guess my point is that by opening it up to all years now (more of a "hall of fame" model), it would feel weird to then close it off and change it into an "Oscars" model next year. Both models are probably good for different reasons and should both exist, just not in the same awards system :p
The other possible issue I see is that when you don't know what other people have nominated, it's possible to "waste" your nomination if someone has already nominated the same cart...maybe nominations should be "open" in some way? I don't know anything about designing systems for nominations/voting...it seems hard to do; these are just some observations that went through my mind.
Also I think there should be a category for "cutest cart" or something like that :D because there are some carts that don't squarely fit into any of the existing categories but I think deserve recognition for how expertly cute they are :>
But anyway, designing/organizing an awards thing seems really hard and it'll probably never please everyone, so I do not envy you :D
True, keeping it open for all years but just preventing re-nominations for the winners of each award might make more sense. Even with keeping the ones for this open to every cart, there's of course still carts that just couldn't have a chance to make it into the nominations at all.
There's certainly no shortage of nominees for any category as it is (one has over 20), so from an organizing and voting side duplicate nominations aren't really a bad thing. I had no idea how it would go, so part of the reason I didn't do anything to prevent duplicate nominations was in case we had enough duplicates that there were several clear favorites. Sparkling has proven to be the only one that really happened with and it still has a fair few options. Overall most nominations wound up being unique, so that theory is clearly out the window.
Cutest Cart could definitely be a good one for future years. On the flipside, maybe there could be a Scariest Cart one too.
And yeahhhh I think ideally in the future the work for preparing posts about it and stuff should be either split between multiple people or handled in part using scripts to automatically format stuff. Can't deny it takes a fair bit of time for one person handling it all manually.
THE NOMINEES ARE POSTED!
You can find the list of nominees for each award on the original post above, as well as links to the voting form.
People have until January 31 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time to vote. Good luck everyone!
~ ~ ~ VOTE ON CARTS HERE! ~ ~ ~
I feel very much honored to be a part of the nominations. There's some great work up there, I'll try and play through the ones I've missed before the deadline!
Seems to have some great variety and a really strong showcase of Pico8 games, well done :)
@rez: It truly is a crime that not ONE of your games/demos got nominated - just know that you are AWESOME and hope to see something else from you soon! ;o)
@Jusiv: It appears that Cat Bandit didn't make it onto the voting page for the 'Vortex' section!
@eggnog: Oh crap, sorry about that! I did try to make sure to look over everything before I posted to verify it all was there but apparently I just missed it.
It should be up there now. Apologies for that, but good thing you caught it this early!
I've just found this thread - super hype to have been nominated so thanks to whoever did that! Will be sure to have a lookin to the games I'm not farmiliar with and get a vote in :)
[EDIT]
Phew, just ran through them all and had a great time! Wow, there really is some brilliant games out there. Feeling inspired. Thanks for putting this list together! I have cast my vote :D (I didn't vote for myself, although it was really, really tempting ;) )
Very cool! Such a great selection.
Note: Feed the Ducks is on the "Underrated" list, but not on the voting form.
@thattomhall Oh yikes, thanks for pointing that out! Feed the Ducks should be on the voting form now.
I believe I have the form set so people can edit responses at the moment so if that changes anyone's votes then you should be able to fix it!
@earthbound I'm hoping to announce them this week!
Apologies for the delay, college work has been pretty heavy lately but I've been wanting to make a cart to show the winners with rather than only directly state them.
Alright, the P8 Awards 2018 results are FINALLY out!
Sorry I kept you all in suspense for so long - college work got heavy right as voting ended and only really just let up now.
yeah, i feel that these awards were flawed from the get-go (what categories? what games/years are in scope? and so on) and the execution/voting mechanism was questionable also, if you look at this peculiar result.
@GodFlowey @earthbound
I was under the impression that I was pretty clear about what the award categories were (the 8 awards as described above) and what carts were allowed (literally any, as it is the first time anyone has tried this). I do admit that I appear to have accidentally removed the information on what carts could be nominated after the nominees were collected, but it was explained on the nomination form, older versions of this post, and in the early replies to it (which are still visible).
These were the results from the google form for the awards Dykie Street won:
I honestly can't speak on how Dykie Street managed to win so many awards as I don't know French so I haven't played it, but it seems to have done it quite legitimately. And yes, the form was set so that people could only send 1 response.
And lastly, don't forget this was entirely an unofficial community effort organized by one person. If you would like to run your own awards that suite your tastes then be my guest!
Thanks for sharing the data.
That means there was a participation of ca. 140 people in total - assuming that most people have answered all the questions and there are no completely separate groups of voters for each category (you will have the exact number).
From these 140 people (which is not the largest number) around 40% have voted for the game in 4 different categories.
I don't want to bash anyone and kudos for all the winners, but 40% seems very high given that so many titles were available for voting (which I referred to regarding my critic above, maybe there had to be some kind of shortlisting in terms of most individual nominations before-hand and also maybe the categories were overlapping too much) and the spread of votes for the other games seem to be more equally distributed among the other games (from what i can see in the graphics).
Again, I don't care/don't favor in any way who has or hasn't won any of the awards, but too me this looks like the votes are biased/not representative for the larger community and maybe we can learn something out of this.
For the future, I see the following possible improvements (if we want to move this forward to more official awards):
- Have community voters (as now) and an "expert group" (around zep) that can also exert votes with a given weight
- Ensure a higher number of voters (via different social channels) to make biases from small numbers less probable
- Have a shortlisting mechanism for nominations to not have too many items for voting
- Think about categories (maybe including more common things like genre, best developer, best graphics etc.) and avoid possible overlap between categories
Regardless of the results of the voting part, I should say I genuinely feel honored to have received several nominations, which I perceive as much more meaningful since the number of votes had nothing to do with that part, and people could have chosen any cart! That's really cool! So to anyone who nominated my carts, I sincerely thank you :)
Yeah I also want to add regardless of the results I had a good time going through the nominated games and found many dimonds so the rewards did a great job of highlighting several great games that I'd missed. It was very exciting to have our game nominated as well! So I'd like to thanks @Jusiv for all his hard work on this project :)
I'll admit, that I too was a little surprised with some of the results, like Dykie Street winning so many. However, I didn't want to say anything earlier because (no matter how I word it) - it will imply that I didn't think it deserved it (or worse, that I'm a "sore loser").
Honestly, I've only played Dykie Street a bit (mainly because I don't understand much French - sorry!). TBH, I was more surprised with "Heavy Karate from Hell" winning best music (again, REALLY not trying to bash it here) - but it's tough not to be surprised when compared to the other MANY impressive nominees.
At the end of the day - if any vote "stacking" was done (e.g. asking friends/classmates to vote), then that's fine - as it seems no rules were broken. Is what it is. ¯\(ツ)/¯
For me, as @kittenm4ster says above - it really was just an honour to be nominated for awards. Anything more would've been just a bonus ;o)
I would also like to publicly thank @Jusiv again for creating, organising and running this whole awards system BY HIMSELF, unprompted, just because he thought it would be a nice thing to do for the PICO-8 community. *claps*
And again, congrats to the winners and all the nominees.
Hey, thanks all for the kind words!
Yes, if we do try to run something like this again we should definitely try to address the issues this version faced.
I certainly agree that reaching a wider audience would help balance things out (that said, thanks so much to everyone who helped spread this while it was still happening!)
I also think one of the biggest issues with the way I ran this was I limited each person to one nomination and one vote per category, rather than something like picking their top 3 options.
We only had about 30 people actually nominate carts, so coupled with the broad range of carts to pick from it wound up that there were a ton of carts nominated just once and rarely multiple clear favorites, so I had no fair choice but to include them all as options.
Perhaps having a second round of voting narrowing down the top 5 or so options from each category to find the actual winner would have been a good idea, too.
Regardless, at the end of the day this did at least prove that there is interest in running this type of event. And if people would like to turn this into a larger thing in the future with more people involved I'd be happy to help out!
Hi !
Thank you everybody. In france, there are a lot of articles in press and web articles about our game (which is an educational game about sexism), all the votes are probably due to this visibility. Dykie Street has a lot of success in schools, feminist festival or media library.
We have translate the game in english here if you want to use it.

For exemple, you can read in huffington post (in french) : https://www.huffingtonpost.fr/2018/04/25/le-jeu-video-feministe-dykie-street-va-vous-aider-a-faire-face-au-sexisme-du-quotidien_a_23419179/
I played Dykie Street's english version, and now I know why it was so popular. It was super short and sort of bland but it supported feminism so yeah. That was literally the only reason, and it absolutely stole Out of the Box from 8 Legs to Love and Feed the Ducks. It also swiped Novella from Dusk Child, however I do think it deserved Underrated. 4 is just way too much for any cart, even legends like Mai-Chan's Sweet Buns, let alone Dykie Streets
