Seeing all the LD Jam carts has me wondering about the Jam category here in the BBS...should carts related to LD and others get posted there? Or go into the normal Cartridges category?

Ultimately, I guess it doesn't matter - they all show up in the primary list - but just wondering what the intent is between the two sections.

I didn't realise the category was there. I've moved my entry to it now :)

I think the idea behind it was for impromptu jam threads like the old tweetjam, as well as submission for official Pico-8 jams hosted by zep, but considering small-scale jam entries might be cluttering up the rest of the BBS it could probably work as an all-purpose jam category. The category is kinda dead as it is anyway :)

It's part of a larger website update that is still pending, so I didn't get around to explaining or announcing it yet! The question of exactly how to use it is still open though..

One motivation for the JAM sub is indeed to offer a place that feels ok to create and/or post in long, high frequency threads (like the tweetjam thread) without worrying about clutter. Examples would be challenges (make a game using only these 3 sprites) and threads for off-site jams, where each thread is a stream of half-finished carts, sprites, design doodles and theme musing, etc.

In this case, threads under JAM would feel more like noisey ongoing events, rather than a list of comments about a particular piece of work (cart). I quite like this idea, and think it would invite more flippant cart making just for kicks in the way that tweetjam does.

I guess that would mean finished Jam entries would still go in Carts though, which perhaps is a little counter-intuitive? Although, it does make sense that carts go in Carts and jams go in Jams!

Wouldn't it be better to have a 'sketch' category for that kind of small thing?

I have difficulty picking between proper carts and WIP, because things are never finished :P

@zep - Totally get what you're after but the label could be confusing...especially if you're new and here to post your LD cart, do you stick it in Carts or Jam? Both sound valid.

Maybe something like Springogeek is suggesting with a category for experiments, or demos or something of that nature - something that's more obvious that it's not for game carts, even those made during a Jam.

There is a high frequency of folks just doing stuff to test out limits and show off horsepower, so I think that type of category would be more than warranted.

It's a tough one and there's probably no silver bullet answer...I had just noticed the Jam category was pretty much empty yet here are a bunch of LD carts coming in.

If anything we could use a Tutorials category for people who want to share their accomplishments following tutorials =)
