Hi there!

I'm new to all of this. I've learned basic programming concepts thanks to my high school. We've done some C, C++, and SQL projects, really simple ones, nothing serious, but I've always wanted to try game development.

Do you guys suggest I buy Picotron? I've seen that there are only a few tutorials about it, so I'm not even sure where to start.

thanks for ur time ;)

Picotron's a bit raw atm. Also there's no proper documentation right now, and everyone is figuring it out by themselves.

You could start with Pico 8. Most os comands ar the same.
Also, you can use documentation of Pico 8 as a base.

take a look in Pico 8 education edition:

I think Picotron is not that far from being great.
There's nothing like it at the moment and you could buy it early (with the current discount) and follow the development, learning while Picotron gets developed.

I know there's a few resources online but they're not a bad way to start. And basically if you lean Pico8, Picotron won't be that hard to get used to. Take a look at the forum, we already have the ability to convert Pico8 carts to Picotron.

I would start with pico8, there are more tutorials and videos for it. I used the nerdy teachers youtube platformer series to make my first game. Pico8 is also easier since it has restrictions. But its your choice both work similar and use lua, when you feel stable with pico 8 switch to picotron. Also i recommend you to buy both now. I hope you have a nice time with pico 8 :)

Adding my agreement to the pile about Pico 8. It has harsh limits which are much easier to make a game inside, tons of resources and documentation, and at this point a supply of games that would make actual consoles jealous, all of which you can view the source of and learn how things were done. It is also much much more mature, with multiple commercial games released.

There probably will be a time where Picotron reaches parity or even exceeds it on these grounds but if you’re starting off on game dev I can’t recommend p8 highly enough and it will always be a fantastic cosy platform to make small, shippable games.

Picotron is very exciting and different while still letting you use much of the same knowledge and skills, so I recommend buying it now and checking in on the state of things every so often when you have the chance.
