Toki Pona tool
OK, so this project has been completely revamped from the original. In addition to cleaning up the dictionary, it now also includes lessons that will teach you how to speak Toki Pona.
Features:
- 20 chapters that teach you everything you need to know to communicate in Toki Pona
- Dictionary revised for clarity and useability
- New UI and color palette. Looks nicer than ever
Enjoy!
It works well!
A suggestion: maybe start each letter section with a header that has the letter on it? I think that would make it easier for someone who didn't read the instructions (-coughs embarrassedly-) to realize that the left and right arrows jump between letter sections as opposed to by page.
I'm glad to see it works well. I mostly made it as a learning tool for myself, but I thought I'd release it just for the heck of it. I was thinking of a lot of graphical stuff I could do to make it prettier, but I probably won't (tbh). I'll make the controls more obvious in the download page, though.
Toki @BrightBlackHole! That's awesome! I thought it was a little weird that I discovered Toki Pona through Pico-8, but it's really neat to know that someone else discovered Toki Pona through Pico-8 as well. Good luck in learning it.
In the future, I might work on a pico-8 software that teaches Toki Pona. Would that be something you would in interested in?
that sounds good but idk if i will use it. depends on if it teaches grammar
@BrightBlackHole Sorry, it doesn't teach grammar (yet). If you want to learn, I would recommend the youtube series "Learn Toki Pona in 12 days" and reading jan Sonja's book.
ilo ni li pona mute a!
It's awesome to see other toki pona people in such a random place! toki pona and PICO-8 go so well with each other, both focusing on simplicity and minimalism to encourage creativity. I'm happy someone made that connection!
P.S. jan Misali promised a remake of "12 days of sona pi toki pona" in 2021, so a better version is coming soon!
@olus2000 They did? I'll have to check it out. I'm on day 9 ATM, and then I'm going to go read the book. I think that I might take some time later to make a new version that's prettier and adds lessons (probably stolen from jan Sonja's book, but whatever). Talking about this has made me realize that there are videos and books on learning Toki Pona, but an education video game would really solidify it as a language (lol).
This project has been completely rewritten. Please check out this updated version.
Sonja Lang has come out with a new dictionary which brings the total number of words to 180 (120 official, ~15 almost official, and ~45 rarely used/ambiguously official words). Once I can get my hands on the book, I'll be sure to update this tool.
