Squid Defense
Summary
Hi, This is my game Squid Defense that (originally for V1.) I spent a little over 8 days working on!
I spent forever trying to make sure it was perfect, but it has some bugs and annoying things to it but I hope it's still fun still. : )
(Might update this later, IDK.)
Goal
Try to defend the Beachball by shooting various sea creatures with ink! (ink has limited use with quick recharge.)
your ball has 4hp and it heals by 1hp at the end of a wave.
Also watch out for the ever changing tide, it might make you rethink how you need to play!
The # of stars after a map's name show the difficulty of that map, every map has 20 waves see if you can beat them!
(Feel free to share your scores and let me know! : P)
Have fun!
Thanks for checking this out and have fun!

I really like the animation in the UI, like the waves in the ink meter and the ink splotch transitions. It's amazing you made this in eight days!
@waynaul thanks for looking at it!
Fillp() was super helpful!
Pretty cool :) Really enjoy the art style.
The main menu confused me a bit, having to wait 3 seconds before starting the game was kinda weird, I'd rather just press a button and be put on a match.
@profpatonildo Thanks! ya I do agree that the countdown is a bit weird for this game because I wanted to copy the feeling of in MW3 or whatever game had the survival mode you have the down countdown that would be interupted constantly by your friends but that doesn't really make sense in a single player game unless I guess if you got 2 people playing together but eh. Thanks for taking the time to look at it anyways! ^_^
This game is super fun! Game Boy-esque tower defense. The music is great, the vibe is great. Fresh and different for pico-8. Give it a whirl, you'll get wrapped up in it real quick.
@Pikorabu was a while ago but was thinking about MW3 or whatever game had the survival mode with the people, and also had the idea for a platformer defend/tower defence game for a while. was doodling and making sprites and the idea of 1-bit and squid was created from 2 sprites each with the idea. making sprites can give a lot of ideas.
@Zenix Studio CTO it really depends on what it is, I'm not sure.
@SandwichBlam is it the runtime error that happens when selecting a stage? I still have no idea why that happens ;\
Ok well I couldn't find out any info about them, they didn't explain anything they were doing and overall it was very doublious. msg gone fine by me.
@SmellyFishstiks it happens right after the 3, 2, 1 countdown to enter the level.
@SandwichBlam I'll look into it and see if I can fix it
Ok fixed it, my old code is such jank; It was setting map toggle to the dget value (0) before writing the first save file as a means of the cart reset but no failsafe when selecting a map to make sure it's not 0 :I
Fixed now, The game is a bit old but hope it's fun still
This is a nice lil thing! I like the 1bit artstyle, although it gets very cluttered when underwater, or when the tideline is just above ground height. The palm trees and that just beside the ball also make things a bit hard to see. So clarity is a bit of an issue.
The music is really nice, and the way the ink flies is really interesting and gets you thinking. When you are blasting back and fourth between the sides and just hitting things with the ink you feel super badass. Great work!
Thank you! Ya I have some future ideas on how to make it more readable like maybe breaking away from pure 1bit and using the scanline palette to give the water level a seperate color maybe.. but ya I feel it's a tiny bit dated but glad it's still fun.
