Another World: SURVIVAL
Imagine the game Another World, but with endless waves of enemies to fight! (#LOWREZJAM entry)

This was my entry to the #LOWREZJAM, using a display of only about 1/8th of the Pico-8 display (64x32 pixels), is a new spin on an old classic!

CONTROLS:

  • Arrows = Move player left/right/crouch
  • Z = Kick
  • X = Fire laser - when you get the gun at Level 3
    • (Hold for a few seconds and release to create a defence shield)
    • (Hold for longer to release a BLAST to destroy enemy shields)

FEATURES:

  • Endless number of levels
    • (Theoretically!)
  • Several classes of enemies to survive from:
    • Water tentacles: Don't linger too long next to the pool!
    • Worms: If they sting you, it's game over!
    • Soldiers: They will use all their skills to defeat you!

Love the leg scratch scene. This whole game entry feels like an easter egg that could've been somewhere in the old game. Everything feels like Another World. Nice Work!!

I guess I should take a look at Vaca. Cutscenes!

Good show old chap. And I agree, you captured the cinematics wonderfully.

Really nice work! Feels like a bootleg Atari version of the game or something (in a good way) :D

Thanks a lot all, much appreciated :o)

@mhughson: Ha! Now I wanna play that Atari version! :D

There has been a (recent) and semi official port of this game on the Atari Jaguar, but I digress.

Wow are you a human?

Last year someone made a playable clone of Alone in the Dark, this year we have Another World?

Wow, I'm always impressed by the quality of things on that platform :)

As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this in the carts list, I just had a nostalgia flashback. When I played it I found it a really amazingly done redux of the game down to its core action mechanics. I was actually surprised the shield and shield breaker mechanics were in there too, And it took just moments to remember how to do them in the original title.

If you had managed even part of that original game's intro, I would have been absolutely floored.

It's funny that you said you had a flashback, since that was the original game's follow-up title. Maybe Liquid can do Flashback: Survival next. ;)

@Godzil:
Cool, did not know about the Jaguar port - will have to check that out.
Ha! Thanks. Yes, very much human - just a long-time fan who clearly had WAY too much time on his hands
(or maybe not, since I ran outta time for the Jam entry)! :D

@DR4IG:
Love that (accidental?) "Flashback" pun. Glad I wasn't the only one to pickup on it!
Glad you appreciated the attention to detail I put in. It's actually very interesting analysing one of your fav games of all time - coz you end up appreciating it LOADS more!

I used both the original game AND YouTube clips (which BTW has a "frame by frame" advance option - REALLY helpful if you wanna see how some fast action in a game is done. ;o)

Funny you should mention the intro; that was my original plan (well, at least SOME of it). But alas, ran outta time.

I may still return to this project (and Enargy's Vector anim engine) some day and do a single cart with just the intro anim. As of now, I got other projects I need to waste- I mean spend- my time on. ;o)

Thanks again!

Felice:
I thought YOU were making that one! ;o)

Could always link the intro cart to the game one with a little of that cstore trickery! Sadly that doesn't work for the html side of things but that way you could have the one cart with the intro lead into the other.

And usually I'm all about the puns but in all honesty I didn't know I'd made that on (The sequel was kind of scarce around here at release.)

wow, that's litteraly Flashback with a lower resolution! Amazing! The gameplay is really like the old one. Well done.

Wow it's really really good ! Actually, combining the leech kicking and the laser fight works so well that I wish Eric Chahi had done it in his original game !!

This is very clever, making a very radical departure from the original puzzle game!

Nice combining of the leeches with the soldiers later on too.

And on a side note, in regards to the Heart of the Alien sequel for the Sega CD, does anyone know why the death metal band Bolt Thrower was mentioned in the end credits when the game was beaten? Been trying to find out for over 10 years now for Harm at the Bolt Thrower faq. Even the band never knew about it until I brought it up!

Once you get to level 4 the game really kicks in. Love it.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
Really appreciated! :D

@joealarson: Yeah, I just hope that most people don't get bored before level 4, and instead, start building a false sense of security... that's about to be crushed! ;P

up to level 4, the game is great, but for me there is a glitch where if i shoot the guy, nothing happens and he kills me. i don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but other then that this game is amazing and i highly recommend it :)

Nothing short of awesome, @Liquidream. Here's hoping LEVEL 4 has been fixed cause I'm working my way towards it.

And here's a STAR to add amongst your other awards.

Thanks for the nice comments @remedise & @dw817 - much appreciated.

There's no glitch, it's as designed (and in the original game). The advancing guards can setup defensive shields to protect themselves.

See the instructions above for details of exactly how to create your own shields, and also fire a BLAST to take out guards shields (where you can then kill them!)

Hope this helps ;)

my dad was inspired by this

ah, but i die at wave 3. how sad.
nice game

I just got my A500 Mini and relived the memories of playing this game. Then I came across this. Amazing game recreation!
