After playing with this for a while, it occurred to me that in a real water-balloon, the weight of the material is practically zero.

I hope you don't mind but I made a very quick go at simulating the weight of the water.

In this crude mod, only the points below the median are weighted. Basically, It stops the top from crushing in.

both versions are so good!

@apLundell that's a clever insight! Looks like a nice improvement to me
