Hi all,
I finally had the time to do some final tweaks and fixes and upload my demake 2018 entry DELUNKY to the bbs!
Enter the caves and try to find as much gold as you can before you perish to the dangers of the depth. Use your trusty whip in combination with bombs, ropes, and whatever you scavenge to get as far as you can.
Controls:
Arrows - move
Down arrow - pickup item
Up arrow - jump
X - use current item (throw/drop/whip)
Z - switch current item
Special thanks:
Derek Yu (@mossmouth) for creating Spelunky
Matt Hughson (@matthughson) for Platformer Starter Kit
Darius Kazemi (@tinysubversions) for great info on map generation
Frederic Souchu (@FSouchu) for pico-8 token optimisation help
ah splunky. nice job doing all this in the limits of the pico. well done
This is great! It really captures the Spelunky-feel and the controls are good
I like that the controls are shown for a while in the beginning.
One bug: I accidentally blew a hole at the bottom of the level and got stuck in it. You can walk below the level but not get out.
I can't remember what happens in Spelunky, if the bedrock is solid or if you can fall down?
This is a great clone. I could probably waste my whole day playing this on my phone (who needs a job anyhow?). Nice work!
Holy crap! I was just thinking the other day I hadn't played this on my Chromebook in a while, plus it's interesting to hear sounds with it, since that version is cracked, having no sound and certain aspects won't work (I heard the Hell levels don't work but I never could make it that far).

One I found is that I couldn't jump from a ladder onto another platform right next to the ladder; the guy wouldn't grab onto the rock, he just kept on falling back down. It was a short ladder, if that helps any.
Also, at one point I went to a new level and it seemed like the top part of the screen was cut off, as the HUD was gone (i. e. no display as to my heath, score, etc.).
Other than that, this is great though!
This is really good! Although I wish there weren't so many places that force me to use an item to get out.
I also got myself out of the level by following a rolling rock!!

The more you play it the more familiar you'll get with it, including spotting those areas. Plus a hint is that
Hey, thanks for the feedback, glad you’re enjoying it! The game is currently at 8192/8192 tokens so I probably won’t be making any more updates! :D
The levels exist in a frame of ordinary rock, so it is fully possible to blast/crush/boulder your way out of it and into nothingness. Better take it easy out there.
@Scathe Post it where?
@PHG There is always a main path from start to exit that doesn’t require items. However, it is easy to be led astray due to greed. :)
@Scathe - Right! Didn't make the connection. Feel free to post on PlayPico.
this is such a fantastic recreation of Spelunky, excellent job!
Added!
Also, some of the features you requested are nearly complete, which will address several of your concerns. I have the profiles feature done, complete with social media & bio, and linking PlayPico and Lexaloffle accounts (to link, you'll temporarily paste a randomly hashed string anywhere in your Lexaloffle profile and click a "verify" button, which will check on your Lexaloffle profile for the string; once verified, you can delete it from your Lexaloffle profile). It's not live yet because it needs some testing, tweaking and polishing, but all the functionality is completed and working on my staging server.
After this phase launches, when someone clicks an author's username on PlayPico, if that author has created an account on PlayPico and linked their Lexaloffle account, they will get all of that author's profile data at the top with their list of games just underneath, rather than just the games list as it is now.
Phase 2 after that will then be to allow verified authors to actually manage several aspects of their games. Update titles, update descriptions, force a manual update of the game cartridge from the BBS (if you don't want to wait for the auto updater), view analytics data such as views, likes, shares, etc., for given time ranges, enable public comments on your games, remove your games from the site, etc.
It's all a pretty big undertaking, so please bear with me as I have a full-time job plus another part-time job and a 2 year old daughter, but phase 1 should be live in the coming days. I would say this week almost definitely, since it's probably about 90% already.
I am a huge fan of Spelunky, so I love it. But I have a couple of things to talk about.
First of all, all money has the same value, whether it be small stack, big stack, nugget, or (I think) idol. Why even have different models if they're all going to be the same value? (Except the idol.) Either have all gold look the same and use the additional resources on... I don't know, making the damsels run or making blocks pushable.
Secondly, if you end a level with a rock or pot or arrow in your hand, it's gone at the start of the next level. If you hit the whip button, it makes a sound, but you don't whip. However, if you cycle through your inventory before you whip, you get your item back and can use it. I'd love if it just kept your item in your hand as you came through the gate.
Oh, and the ladders dangling over the spikes that are just too high for you to grab, but make you think that you can so you jump and fall into the spikes... can we get those fixed?
Besides that, I'm a bit sad there's no upgrades like springy boots or sticky gloves and there's really only one level, but I'm impressed by what is there.

Yeah, like he said, he's pretty much out of room for anything else. A LOT is missing but he got enough of the basics in to still make it addicting and catching the spirit of the original.
Hey, thanks for the feedback. Spelunky has such a deep and intricate set of mechanics it was simply impossible to fit them all. Luckily it is a demake! :D
The gold stuff is a bug though, the bugger chunks should be worth 2x.
Best I can do. Amazing and challenging game.
Gold Star ⭐

It's a lot harder than Spelunky is. He isn't jumping as high as he should, he can't look up or down, he can't throw stuff as far, and he gets hurt by anything that bumps into him rather than requiring a high enough velocity. I fell a certain height, and I got stuck below the map.
I also couldn't jump on the bats.
Update bump!
I fixed a bug which caused all gold to be worth the same amount. Big gold pieces/piles are now worth 3 times as much as small ones.
Happy delunking!
@tiskolin - it will come back soon! Various reasons that are to boring to detail. Nobody got hurt. :)
hey @johanp, this was great! weird question, i was wondering wondering how you render the pixel size so small? the game i'm working on at is using standard camera code and the player character is coming out bigger than i want it to (for reference the spelunky sprite and the play character sprite are the same height but the spelunky sprite appears smaller). how did you code it to do that?
Found 2 glitches in rapid succession: 1. You can't enter the exit door if there aren't any tiles below it I.E destroyed by the idol trap and 2. The door is destroyed by ropes
I also would like the ability to whip arrows out of the air before they would hit you, or adding in starting with 4 or maybe 5 hearts, seeing how much harder this game is than spelunky proper. 10/10 game though
This is extremely impressive. Very well done, particularly given the limitations of the platform. Your artwork is notably great too.
Bugs:
If you will go to the door with an object, after pressing X something uhh, weird happens. If you go to the door with an object but you have bomb/rope selected, then you can switch to the object that you had before entering the door.
The boulders can break the borders of the map, idk if i said that before.
You can enter a door while falling and you'll be okay.
This is a great demake of my main pastime during 8th grade, I'm only slightly sad that I don't just get 99 hearts from pressing f3.
I never really played the original back in the days because it seemed
to hard for me. But i absolutely love this demake. It's still hard and
unforgiving but on the other hand so satisfying and addictive.
Brilliant work, as always.
Great fun. I found a bug... I dropped a bomb at the very bottom of the level, and blew a hole in the bottom row of tiles. When I dropped through the hole, I fell out of the map. I was off screen, and could walk left and right (as evidenced by the scrolling) but couldn't jump back onscreen again to reach the level exit.
Reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaallllly great Game! 🍑 It's also reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaallllly difficult to climb a edge on phone and also Sometimes Game glich Out and for no reason i don't have one bomb even If i don't throw one. 🍑 it's still a solid game.
