I don't want to have this conversation on a cart so it keeps getting bumped.
I think PICO-8 is a fantastic way to learn programming and the bbs should be kid-friendly to promote programming. Can we get a way to flag posts? Either to review for removal, or at least to hide them unless you're logged in? If there are enough flags perhaps it gets automatically removed or hidden from sight.
As someone else mentioned, hosting adult content (as pixelated as it is) may block acces from school networks.
I completely agree. Not only "for the kids", mind you, but some people might find this kind of games unpleasant or offensive in general. I, myself, come to PICO-8 with a specific, albeit perhaps wrong, kind of mentality. I come here to make and play the games that I believe could have been on the NES if developing for that was easier/cheaper, because the NES is the platform that PICO-8 reminds me of the most. And, I'm quite sure that some people here come seeking the same thing, that "retro" feeling that the NES games (or other platforms around that time) would give them, but only in new, different games on a new, but very similar platform. These nsfw games aren't the kind of games you'd expect to see on the "retro" consoles, and so they feel out-of-place, but perhaps I'm just looking at this platform in the wrong way. If an NSFW game would be on any other platform, I might have played it and even enjoyed it, but here, it just really, really doesn't work for me.
There's a long history of nudity or violence in games. I don't think those things are 'bad' in media by themselves, and if consenting adults want to view or create them, they should be free to. Whether it's artistic, purposefully crude, or otherwise.
However, it's completely up to zep on what he wants to allow to be hosted here, of course. I wouldn't begrudge him for wanting to disallow any kind of content entirely -- if someone wants to post something outside of the ToS, they can easily upload their cart to itch.io or their personal site.
Having a NSFW flag is a good idea. With it set to hide those posts by default. And since one of pico-8's goals is to promote programming education, keeping nsfw content hidden/opt-in should be made a priority.
@tlm: That's an interesting take.. but keep in mind that the Famicom Disk System had a TONNNN of nsfw content. Most of them were unlicensed games, but still. Also imo, if there had to be a console analog to pico8, it's a lot closer to the Gameboy Color than the NES. A better fit though would be a computer like the C64, or PC88/98.
@enargy -- all I've said is just how I feel about this platform, really. It may or may not apply to you. I'm unaware of the games specific to the FDS (I think that was a Japan-only expansion, right?), but I might have to look into that because that's a fact I didn't know about at all. And, while I'm sort of inclined to agree that home computers (C64) may feel closer to the PICO-8 because of the command line thing and the BASIC-like programming language, I've never actually used one of those, so I know really almost nothing about them.
Nah, I hear you. Honestly nothing is really an absolute fit. It's drawing inspiration from a lot of places. The 1st issue of the Pico-8 fanzine had a really good article about that by the creator of Pico-8.
Yep, FDS was JP only. The whole FDS library is pretty small and obscure. Hit me up on twitter or something if you want suggestions on what's worth playing.
@tlm I agree with your feelings, but unfortunately the only thing that kept those kinda games away from consoles was licencing. One of the most offensive games ever made was Custer's Revenge for the Atari 2600. So some folks were motivated enough to make that crap even when it was expensive and difficult.
It definitely feels like Pico 8 or any console creates a community, it's a little strange to have the community here somewhat dictated by what zep implements, but Nintendo did it for its developers. I'm sure no one wants to censor anything, but perhaps as a community there should be guidelines for posting non-friendly material elsewhere
I mean there is a lot of great games like Leisure Suit Larry, that are meant for adults, and I think the old ones even had some primitive age locks. They were cool, but I think we all agree that if adult content is allowed (and my vote is that it should be) that it should be kept separate from the kid friendly stuff, or not available by default.
I'd also like some way to self police offensive content. I'm pretty sure these boards aren't moderated.
Content filters are in the works, as part of community tagging (anyone can tag any post with a set of pre-defined tags), and will eventually also work with SPLORE when log-ins are operational. Carts tagged as mature-content / adult-content will be hidden by default.
Hey Zep, I'm not sure on your standing of DRM for PICO-8, but are you planning to use action of logging into splore act as a sort of DRM? That would be a pretty cool idea.
a day til 2017 and kids are a click away from viewing literally anything from HD execution videos to the most graphic porn ever produced(which by the way both is heavily entrenched in our pop culture).. And if they are not looking for it, im sure their friends are, and they will be exposed to it on some level.. The fact that this is even a topic on here seems pretty ridiculous and backwards. I think its pretty unlikely seeing some pixel dicks or something is going to scar a child, and I mean its one thing if its hi rez, but we are talking 128x128 pixels in 16 colors..
