Mother Turt has laid her clutch and left them to find their way to the sea! Avoid crabs and seabirds to escape.

Left/Right set turt's direction
Up/Down switch between selected turt
A/B Menu confirm

I drew the main turtle in photoshop. Thought I'd add the script I wrote to import it. Provide your png, cart, and sprite index and it does the rest:

I'm not planning on working on this any more. I got what I wanted out of this project. If you'd like to work on it, the source is available on my github:

This is a fun idea! Looks like it's pretty far along for a work in progress. Cute graphics, but the death scenes are intense! :S Haha, it really took me by surprise. XD

Very cute. The crab / turtle and ocean animation are great.

The death animation is fun but way too long. You should probably make these poor turtle corpses vanish faster :)

Here's some balance/gameplay idea :

  • 4-5 sea zone. +2 if you reach an active zone, +1 if it is already visited. Reset when all zone visited. So player have to find different path instead of always using same.
  • Crabs sometime overlap too much making the game too easy. Some recal may help to get them separated
  • The crabs can move really near the spawn zone, condemning some turtle to die if they spanw in the wrong place.

This is great! excellent art and concept.

I feel like it may be helpful to have the z/x buttons switch turtles as well. It took me a minute to figure out that is was up/down.

It was super duper cute until one of them died and then it was more like that Bloodborne game. Their blood vessels are bigger on the inside. 0_0

Agree the death is too much. You feel sorry for them :|

N33kos, it's stated on the instructions about switching the turtles. I just don't get what the a/b thing is though, as that doesn't do anything unless I'm missing something.

Apparently a turtle has a very large volume of blood in its body. Who knew?

I like the control scheme, btw. That's a re-usable idea, right there. The persistent direction with an indicator is a good move.

Love the control mechanic...gonna have to borrow that one for a future game for sure. Also liked how the crabs seem to have subtle movement rather than just following the babies.

Great title screen, it's very Pico-8.

As far as gameplay goes, yeah... The crabs can get too close to the eggs, but aside from that they also don't seem to enter the grass overhang on the right side. Ever. Crabs always spawn in from the left, and wander around the center, leaving the rightmost lane mysteriously safe.

That means I don't have to find routes through the crabs at all, it's just a matter of directing all my turtles to the right and then forward again before they get too far into the grass. Kind of defeats the purpose of the game, but then again it's rather difficult to guarantee a possible route for a turtle to take otherwise, especially when the crabs start shifting around faster and you get a slow turt. :(
