I don't have something to post as a cart yet, but i'll post this capture of what i'm doing right now.
The animation has some color replacements to test the looks of the four turtles. This is the first iteration of how will look one of the three levels i plan to put in the game.
Updated:
Current status: Tech demo. Rewritten all sprite, frame, anim mechanics because i've hit all the limits at the same time :P
No bebop and rocksteady spawning this time, but it's useful to look at the changes i did to the code.
It has a HUD now.
Current status: Tech demo. Barely playable, but with hud and shoots.
Current status: Tech demo. Barely playable.
Woah sick! Make it a fighting game!
(Raph looks like from the old comics when hiding.)
Wonderful! May I "borrow" your sidewalk graphics, because I need something in these colors for HDS (my current graphics for pavement there kinda sucks) and this is much better that what I can muster?
As for Pizza's idea, well making proper fighting game on a two button (aside of dpad) system is a bad idea, unless you want it to be Urban Champion or not have any combos/special moves.
of course you can @darkhog!
it's not the finished version, so they can end up different anyway.
and for the gameplay, i'm aiming directly to a ninja gaiden style but i'm trying to make it sense to have a little stealth
but i can make it a beat em up later using the same graphics... it's mostly what konami did with tournament fighters :P
@Pizza ralph looking like mirage comics it's the idea :) and all thanks to Maikel, he make the idle sprite (in about ten seconds) and it's perfect for the look and feel i want.
The only thing I have to say is this:
Add the NES boss battle music, please!
HIT IT!
thanks @matt!
haha @Skyrunner65 i was planning to do that, and some version of tatsujin for shredder xD
well.. after a series of tests i discovered something important: music is not my field. i think i'll ask for help for that.
this looks great. love the old TMNT games. if you need help with music, i could lend a hand, thats what i mainly do ;)
just getting into pico but i do know trackers ;)
@lewislepton thanks!!! i need 4 tracks inspired in the original nes game.
intro (and ending), gameplay, miniboss like the one @Skyrunner65 posted, and some version of tatsujin for shredder.
any help is welcomed!
@nineraser
cool spot. ill start giving it a go in the morning tomorrow. using today to get used to pico first ;)
plus ive got a curry dinner with friends in a bit ;)
but yeah, ill get hold of the original tracks then work on something ;)
i do have some previous things i have made before, but not pico related. ill PM you with what i have later on ;)
thank you @lewislepton!
There's no hurry, and anyone can help with a track if you want.
i'll credit everyone in the ending screen, that will be a sad simple text for sure :P because tokens :P
if you want and can help with some of the track, please post here what track are you making so if anyone else want to help, doesn't do the same track :)
thanks again!
Looks adorable! :D
Are you going for a hack and slash game? I saw you can hide and it made me curious where you are going with that.
@Diego the tech demo is in the first post, you can test the proto-gameplay (there's no level and no spawn points) and it can gave you an idea of what to expect from the gameplay.
Ah yes, I did play the demo :) was just wondering what to expect besides that.
@Diego something like ninja gaiden i think. with more platforming because the controls are softer than ninja gaiden's.
and i'll try to rely less in "spawn-in-the-face-and-hit-directly-to-a-pit".
@nineraser
well i got hold of the music to listen to and see which one to start with. luckily they just have to be short looped things, which is good ;)
ill maybe PM you instead with what i have. first send a mp3 for you to listen, then can send the actual pico code ;)
@lewislepton cool (i didn't found the pm section yet :P, but you can email me too)
This tiny demo is already more fun and more interesting and more true to the series than the first home turtles game that appeared everywhere. Nice!
hahahahaha
thanks @hseiken!
the first TMNT for NES is why i've become a games dev.
it's not that the game is too bad, is because the reasons for why i consider it not enough. it's because of what it could have been if it followed better the comics story line or the cartoon.
trying to do both, mixing it with nonsense npcs and a nightmare difficulty (i played it when i was 7) was what convinced me that it had to be a better way to do a turtles game, with that hardware specs.
I'm amazed at how much you got mashed into one cart already.
Thank you! I'm planning to continue development in it soon :)
Somebody went to the school of Ninja Gaiden or Sunsoft Batman! Jumping from wall to wall to wall to wall to get higher...felt exactly as it should. Good job.
Looks good ! I would NOT have the camera jump when the player jumps. Only track the camera if there is a new vertical landing for the player (like they jumped to a higher or lower pedestal).
You can see good use of this in RAYMAN:
https://youtu.be/9j5Ad_Pwtzw?t=92
Notice how lazy the vertical camera is to follow.
Other than that, really slick graphics and movement. Good use of the SAI !
@geistvonpa Thank you, I will!
@Triumverent I'm changing it to standard beat em up because I didn't know what to do exactly with the "ninja" mechanics, so I prefer to go with the good ones I know.
@dw817 I'll redo the camera later. Right now is barebones. Thank you!
Fair enough! All you need now is Shredder and Krang, right? Digging the versatility of the two versions. Keep the back on the back burner for when you're more inspired.
which one's better ?
let's see if pico8's token limit let me do this somehow xD
