Pico Valley!
I love that cozy games are finally getting big, and one of my favorite cozy games is,without a doubt, Stardew Valley. I played Harvest Moon growing up and enjoyed it a lot, but when somebody told me about Stardew Valley my mind was just blown. This is why I decided to make a Stardew Valley demake that i could have played growing up.
Update:18.11.23
I hate reading old code. Well at least I can be sure I got better since April :D Let's go.
- added the ability to play the brilliant Journey Of The Prairie King Demake which was quite the undertaking. A lot of things needed to work together in order to return the player to the original game with all of the progress saved. Read more about it on the Journey Of The Prairie King page.
- repixeled a lot of sprites, toned down the contrast
- added the graveyard
- added the saloon and 2 new NPC`s
- added save file detection
- rewrote token wastezones(the rest of the code is still a hot mess though)
- adjusted the time scale to 0,7 of the previous value
- increased the maximum energy
- added an interaction indicator
Update:23.4.23
- rebalanced some values
- you now loose some items if you fall unconcious
- made music track longer
- update mining palette
It is a 64x64 recreation of Pelican Town and some of its residents. The code started out clean but got messy fast because i wanted to finish this game.
I made some boxart and a manual for the game:
Before i upload this to itch.io i wanted to upload it here. Here are a few pages from the manual:
Things to note:
-if you want to keep your progress open the game in Pico8, your progress is saved on every new day
-get your fishing rod at the beach
-enjoy yourself and don't hesitate to report bugs!
-this is somewhat modable and i encourage everybody to make their own little town and characters. There is some (but not a lot) of documentation in the code to get you started.
Thank you so much! I made an official Itch side(https://taxicomics.itch.io/pico-valley-a-stardew-valley-demake) and i really hope that Concerned Ape sees this. I also made a small balancing update but you get to keep your saves :) Enjoy!
Yes, that was surprisingly very fun. Ill do a post about it soon, but i am still thinking about writing a tool to make it easier to create your own box art and maybe manuals for your games. For the manual I used a great template by Soully (https://soully.itch.io/game-boy-instruction-manual-figma-template). The boxart was more manual work, but the most annoying part was removing the branding.
Oh and i also never changed the cart in the bbs,the update that i described in the post wasnt even live ^^
Hey, I love this. Which probably means I would enjoy stardew valley lol.
Question, when you neglect plants and they die, is there a way to clear that spot and plant something new?
There's also a mysterious item I've found a couple of in the caves, but I don't see it in my inventory. Maybe it will make sense if I talk to the right person or something
Side note, the days are very short, and the only way I've had enough time to get down to the gold in the mines is by playing on an emulation device where the day cycle is essential turned off because of no internal clock. If there's much more any deeper, that would also be hard to get to because shortly after that I pass out from exhaustion. I don't think there's a way to replenish health on the fly?
Hi! I'm glad you're enjoying the game! You'll probably love stardew valley if you like this game :)
The plants in this game are resilient, once you start watering them again they should continue growing-i think. I will have to check that again, it's been a minute ^^
And what did you find in the mines? Maybe just plain stone?
Anyway, thank you for thoroughly playtesting the game! Did you manage to get some of the farm buildings?
I will maybe readjust the time scale, maybe it is a little too arcady at the Moment.
And wow,no internal clock is a very smart workaround :D
The only way to replenish your energy is the bath house, but yes, you'll loose your mine progress because you have to leave the mine to go there.
Edit: You might be on to something with the plants dying-i'll look into it once i have more time
At this point I've almost filled the museum, and am like just about to get the barn. My chickens are very cute :)
The thing in the mines was the shape of the hunks of gold but had some green in it? Kind of looked like a pile of slime. I was able to grab it but I don't know if I "have" it. I couldn't take a screenshot at the time, and the color is way off on this picture, but if it helps
Edit: is it another enemy maybe? I've only seen it twice I think, and it didn't move, but I didn't try standing on it to see if it hurt me
Ah yes, that is crystal! Something you can find deep down in the mines. It is rather rare because Metal and Stone also spawn in the same depth zone. Do you have crystal in your inventory?
It is so great to see my game being played on your device, thanks for the screenshot! And it is great to hear about your progress. I don't even have a coop in my own save :D
Really? I have gotten crystal before, but I thought that was white and shaped more like a pyramid? Or is that like diamond or something?
I didn't even have to break the rocks to find this thing
Edit: yeah I found some crystal to compare. Not sure
Thank you so much! I`m glad you enjoyed it :) I finally got around to updating the game(have a look at the original post) and was able to see what happened to you, @liambronjames.
There is gold and crystal in the mines, and with the changing palette it does look very different from level to level. Your first screenshot was gold, the second was crystal. I don't think that you kept playing the game and I hope you finally got around to enjoying the original, but now you have some closure.
The plant's dying and then not despawning was a bug that I never found because I always kept them watered. Playtest, Playtest, Playtest, folks!
I adjusted the timescale and amount of energy in the latest update and added yet another way to replenish your stamina, so maybe have another go :)
Been able to play a bit! Awesome! Not having anymore problems. Not sure I'm seeing the other stamina boost, but if it's supposed to be sneaky, I'll keep looking
Oh wait! That's awesome!
Also, I have like a hundred cows.
This is very charming and very underrated. It's a shame so much gets buried in the BBS. Lovely music, too!
