[UPDATED 22/06/2016]
Picross game with 12 easy (10x10) puzzles and 15 normal (15x15) puzzles.
X to draw
Z to mark
Arrows or mouse to move
[UPDATED 25/06/2016]
Added an option in the pause menu to leave the current puzzle and go back to the level selection screen.
Hey man, I hacked in mouse support as a proof of concept:
I think the game would really benefit from this. See this forum thread for details on the (undocumented) mouse support:
https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=3549
The code is really a mess, I just stuck it in where I could to see if it would work, so I recommend you tidy it up to fit in properly with the rest of the code if you want to use it. I hope this helps. :)
Edit: Uploaded with a screenshot so it doesn't mess up the thread preview.
Cool, didn't know we could use the mouse - just picked PICO-8 yesterday and did this quickly to try it out (hence the messy code :)).
I didn't plan on extending this but perhaps I will if I have time :)
Thanks
edit: I see this is running 0.1.7 but only found 0.1.6 to download - can we get 0.1.7 somewhere?
I wasn't saying your code was a mess, I meant what I did was a mess. I just realised that wasn't very clear. You should see the code in my carts! :p
There are a few dark corners of pico-8 that are either undocumented or poorly documented. The mouse support is one of them.
Updated with mouse support (thanks mrh for the suggestion) and 15 new bigger (15x15) puzzles.
Also progress should now save to the cartdridge :).
i really like the visual minimalism
the controls are mostly what you'd expect
i appreciate that it saves your finished puzzles across runs
only one thing really bothers me, which is that i can't escape a puzzle after i accidentally enter it, except by solving it or resetting (i didn't want to reset before, because i didn't realize progress was saved, but now i might just do that)
edit: a nice feature would be, possibly off by default, highlighting rows whose constraints are violated
I have added an option in the pause menu so that you can leave the current puzzle and go back to the puzzle selection screen :)
yay! i'm glad that feature exists now. there are only so many buttons :P
i'm having a really tough time solving the 15x15 that's on the bottom and second to the left. i got all the others without too much trouble; is this one actually solvable?
edit: the bbs doesn't like unicode apparently.
Nicely implemented. It's unfortunate that a few of the puzzles aren't solvable without trial and error.
Damn, thanks helado for pointing this out - that bottom-second-to-left 15x15 puzzle was not solvable because one of the rows had 7 numbers but only 6 can be displayed! :(
I have edited it so that it's solvable now. It's still challenging because you still need to make asumptions (or trial and error as zatyka says) almost right from the start but I think that's also part of the game.
The way I personally solve it is by guessing the first row ; I'm not sure how to explain that exactly in english but hopefully that picture will help.
It does not always work but it works in a lot of picrosses :)
Really nice game. I've find a little bug:
If you open 15x15 puzzle, move the cursor to (12,3), exit puzzle, then open a 10x10 puzzle, the cursor is outside the screen.
So you should center the cursor at the beginning of the puzzle :)
I think I discovered a bug,
On some of the levels I played, if you exited the level while you were solving it, and then re-enter it later, the level doesn't save what you did, and that's expected.
But the win pop-up that tells you to press A will appear. Once you press it, it takes you to the level screen and that level appears to be completed
I love this!
crown: the numbers tell you how many squares are filled in this row or column, for example 2 1 means two touching each other then 1 not touching the other 2. cross-reference the horizontal and vertical numbers to determine where squares should be!
in the first puzzle, starting in the center is easier: one line has 10 so fill all squares (using 🅾️), then when you have a line with a number 2 and one square already filled, you can make a mark (❎) on the two neighbour squares to note that they are candidates.
I never enjoyed sudoku but now I see that picross is fun!
While waiting for @nbst to eventually update the original cart...
Here's a playable version with fixed bugs:
