I let one goblin live so he could tell the tale.

I think you're method of placing the goblins is off, some goblins spawned in the water. Maybe an accidental x+1 or y+1 in there somewhere? I only saw them spawn next to a grass tile and only south or east.
Apart from that a good start! Have fun finishing it :)
