Casino Blackjack!
I made this to get an idea of how to make an attractive card game in Pico-8. UI needs a lot of work, but the game is there. Might be a few edge cases that break it.

Controls:
Left/Right to change action
X to select action

Hand Signals:
Hit...........Tap cards
Stand.........Wave hand
Double Down...Point w/one finger
Split.........Point w/two fingers

Features:

  • 4 standard actions: Hit, Stand, Double Down, and Split
  • Actions notated by standard hand signals
  • Randomly generated card backs
  • Slick card physics
  • $1000 starting cash, on the house
  • Only a single deck to allow you to practice counting cards!

Upcoming Features:

  • Face card portraits
  • Set your own bet amounts
  • Clearer UI
  • Dealer settings (# of decks, hits on soft 17, etc.)
  • Tutorial?

Known Bugs:

  • Face down card appears in player's hand sometimes. Doesn't affect gameplay.
  • Game freezes if both the dealer and the player are dealt a natural blackjack.

Enjoy!

Nice playing cards! I like your trick of putting an outline around the number and letting the pips fill the card - nice way to compact them a little.

I'm pretty familiar with card games, @MisterWizard01. Noticed the dealer getting an Ace and did not ask for insurance.

Blackjack insurance is a side bet, which players are allowed to take advantage of if the dealer’s up card is an ace. Simply put, the player is betting that the dealer will have a blackjack.

The basic rules of blackjack insurance are as follows:

Once the cards are dealt, the dealer will say, ‘Insurance Open’, asking the players to place a side bet if they want to.

In case, a player decides to use an insurance bet, he will have to place half of his bet in the insurance spot on the table before the insurance is closed.

If the dealer indeed has a blackjack, the player is paid 2:1 on the side bet.

If the dealer does not have a blackjack, then the player loses the insurance bet and continues playing with the regular hand dealt.

If the player already has a blackjack and wins the insurance bet too, the payout is 3:2.

In videogame terms, if the dealer has an Ace showing at the beginning of a hand, the player is asked Y/N to take out insurance. If yes and the dealer has a natural blackjack, ace and face card, then the player wins 2:1

If not, the player is informed that the dealer does not have a Blackjack and the player loses that bet amount and game play continues as normal.

@packbat I got the outlined numbers idea from High Stakes by @Krystman. I can highly recommend everything that dude has made. Playing High Stakes and Mai Chan's Sweet Buns is honestly what showed me that it's possible to make highly polished games in Pico-8, and what inspired me to make this Blackjack game (which I intend to use as a starting point when I make an original card game).

@dw817 Thanks for bringing that up! Insurance (and potentially other, more obscure side bets) are something I intend to add in the future. I appreciate the in-depth description, though. I will certainly be referring to your comment when I get around to finishing this.

Cheers to both of you for playing!

I really like it. Board games are a great direction to develop in the creation of games. For a long time I was planning to start my own activity in this field, but I kept putting it off. Your work brings me back to old thoughts.
Now I understand that PICO-8 gives a lot of opportunities for beginners and I like it a lot already, though unfortunately I have not heard anything about this fantastic console for creating and sharing games before.
Overall, I think that your plan for this project can be considered quite successful. Here is a nice combination of controls, hand signals, function and upcoming features in this Blackjack game. For me, this is important and convenient, as I often play modern online gambling, and most of the time I play Blackjack.
By the way, I recommend to everyone the useful resource Leaflet Casino, where you can learn from reviews about top online casinos in Canada in 2022, without which in today's world it is difficult to cope, both a beginner and an experienced player, because a very important aspect is to get the best gaming conditions. The experts of this company constantly research hundreds of gaming sites, services, as well as directions and possibilities for players to give an idea of what most players play and what they need to feel confident and comfortable in the game, moreover, to be able to earn money.
