Hi folks. This is my first game created within PICO-8. I love it, growing up in the UK with a ZX Spectrum this makes me feel really nostalgic. The inspiration for this cart is an old game from 1983 but it's not that similar as that one was more action based.
Seeing as I have some disability I wanted to create a game you can play with one hand and turn based (so no quick reactions required). Hopefully it's got some merit but (and maybe it's just me) I do think it's quite challenging.
A little tip; there are some very subtle visual clues so when it seems you are stuck look hard.
Anyway, good luck and thanks for reading.
Neat game! I got stuck on my first attempt, but eventually I figured it out. I like the way the turn-based mechanics include bumping against a wall as a turn, because that lets me get the first hit on enemies.
Thanks. I wasn't sure whether to change that aspect or not but I settled on leaving it. I think it would raise the difficulty too high by removing it.
Oh, heads-up: it looks like there's some kind of bug with the best time?
runtime error line 160 tab 5 if best_time_seconds == 0 or current_time < best_time then attempt to compare number with string at line 0 (tab 0) |
I think the game might be trying to compare the string version of the best time instead of the seconds version.
Apologies, especially as you got right to the end and that happened. You're correct, I was using the actual duration as opposed to the one converted to seconds. But, I've now fixed and uploaded it.
No problem at all - glad to have been able to find a bug for you!
I really enjoyed your game. Great fun to play and once you understand the mechanics of the game world and the hit points of the enemies it was really enjoyable. Also it took me a few goes to realise that the treasure chests held random contents.
Was your inspiration Atic Atac by Ultimate ?
Thanks, I'm really pleased you enjoy it. Yes, the inspiration was Atic Atic on the ZX Spectrum, one of the first games I played as a teenager. I have MS so I'm looking to make games that you can play mostly with one hand. I'm almost done with another and it's completely different to this one. I'm really enjoying the process though, I'm a software developer to trade but I've been working in the financial sector for years so this is quite a departure.
