I am going to throw together a last minute entry for the Game Boy Jam (https://itch.io/jam/gbjam-5). I just started tonight, and the deadline is end of this weekend (Oct 9th, 2016), so this will likely be a pretty rushed entry.

I'm a programmer, and I would love to work together with an artist and sound designer if possible to help add some visual polish.

If you are interested please post some links to you work; preferably completed projects.

GAME IDEA

Wave Race Legend

2D jet ski game where you bounce off waves trying to take down AI opponents. A mix of Joust and Wave Race 64.

For simplicity there will likely be no "race" aspect to the game; just survive as long as possible.

As I mentioned, I just started this project, but here is a quick gif of my current progress to hopefully give you an idea of what I mean:

ABOUT ME

Here's a couple of carts are recently released:

Professionally, the game I spent the last 3 years making is launching this weekend, so I'll probably be spending some hours on that this weekend too :)

You can read more about my professional work here: http://www.matthughson.com/

I'm pretty good with miniature graphics, MHugson, so if you have something you would like me to make on a small scale, I just might be able to do it.

As for your newest cart, That's a fine looking toboggan you have there. :) Will be great for surfers.

That would be awesome, dw817. I think the main thing I need right now are some jetskis with riders!

Here's an updated gif of what I currently have:

Some details:

  • I am using 16x16 sprites, but open to other ideas.
  • Rider and Jetski should ideally be separate sprites so I can knock the rider off etc.
  • GBJAM is limited to 4 colors so ideally these sprites would only use 2-3 and have some sort of outline to avoid bleeding into the background.

  • Ideally there would be a pose/animation for jumping (legs flying out the back)

I'll be uploading the cart here: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=27836

I'd love to help out with the artwork for your cart! I've done quite a few pieces using the PICO-8 palette before which you can find on my Twitter.

Just as an idea it could be cool to have some parallax scrolling backgrounds using sprites to make it look like you're speeding across the water.

Great looking stuff, @PixelCod! I DM'd you on twitter; figured that might be a easier way to talk :)

Sorry, didn't mean to leave you in the dark. Not sure what size you want. This is a variation on a snow skier with a different color set.

Colors are your friend. Here's a shifted palette for the 2nd rider. Red so maybe he's the bad guy or something.

[8x8]

Both images are using PICO's color set so no conversion is needed.

Just messing around. I know it's 2am. :) This one is a bit sleeker I think.

This one has a rider on it, if you want that.

Those look great @dw817! I am limited to 4 colors though for the #GBJAM. Any thoughts on how to drop the color count? I am mostly interested in the 24x16 one; the others take up 1/4 of the screen :D Might be awesome for the title screen though!

4-colors, no problem. Wait ... How do you do that ? What colors are you limited to from the 16 ? Do you get white and gray in there at least ?

Also a new version from last night (no new art):

4 colors TOTAL (white and grey would could as 2). Across the whole game, as if you were working on the GameBoy. I haven't picked the 4 I want to use, because I figured an artist would want to pick them.

Well that includes 4-colors for the whole screen right ? Aren't you already using WHITE (Text), (Dark blue) Sky, and Light Blue, (Water ?)

Or can the sprite have an original 4 of the 16 ?

Would it be easier if the sprite I made was one-color only ?

Basically, imagine Pico-8 had 4 colors instead of 16. Which 4 we use is up to us. Traditionally you would pick 4 shades of the same color (eg. Very dark green, green, light green, almost white green).

Here's an example of Smash Bros Demake using GameBoy color pallet.

You can pretty much ignore any colors I am already using. I will update the existing text, water, etc to use what ever 4 color we decide on. :D

I also think the jetski will work better at 16x16 if possible. I am trying out your 24x16 one now, and it feels a little too big, and clips through the water quite a bit (since it doesn't rotate to match surface normal).

Quick hack job:

Also, if you want to PM me on Twitter that might be easier to chat :D

Smaller jet ski. Lemme see. I get to pick the 4-colors ? Hmm ... There are some lovely palettes that came with the Super Gameboy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Game_Boy

4-colors. Let's keep #1 (dark blue), #7 (white), and #12 (light blue). I think you're already using these.

Now the bonus color I think would look good is ... # 8 (red). Now you may be asking why such a different color ? You can save that for wipeouts or the finish line or whatever you want to stand out.

And since it's only used for that, you can of course choose any other color than red.

With this in mind, I don't think I should make a sprite that uses more than one color. You've already doodled some skiers in monochrome. Let me try.

[8x8]

I see what you've done. I can rotate it if you like.

[16x16]

I messed around with the images you sent, and I think I got something that works pretty well.

With a limitation of 4-colors, I think you just about got it as good as you can. Minju, I think you they are surfing in SLIME now. :D

Yah I agree about the slime thing... I'm programming things in a way that I can just call PAL to swap out the 4 colors (might even allow the user to do it).

How about some particles that pop out from behind when you accelerate ?

Hmm ... You know, if you're limited to 4-colors, you could change the colors for every level ? Start out slime, then magma, concrete, etc ... and save clear blue water for the highest level of play, a reward for the player to stick the game out to conclusion.

Yah I'd like to do that and also some when landing.

Yah I had a similar thought! Just doubt I will have time before the cutoff time.

A TIME LIMIT for writing code ? Augh ! Heretic, stand back, I'll ... I'll ... pout profusely ! :D

That takes all the fun out of it if you're harried and hurried to write code. Lor' I never would take up that kind of assignment.

Tweaking code for years to come with no plans of EVER finishing it - well that is the icing on the cake !

Heh, that's what I like about it: no way to procrastinate :D

Game has now been entered in #GBJAM: https://itch.io/jam/gbjam-5/rate/90361!

Please play and vote!

Checking ... it says I can't rate your game unless I submit one of my own ... :/
