Controls

Use the D-Pad or arrow keys to move your character around the map. Press X to buy items from the shop, read through pages of guides, and hold O to use the buyable Magnet item.

Basics

To start the game, you'll move into a yellow square. Inside, there will be a click--which you want to collect--and an enemy, which ALSO tries to collect the click. You can buy items in the shop for clicks, to aid you in gaining EVEN MORE CLICKS! The goal of the game is to buy the trophy before the enemy does. Don't let the enemy deceive you, though. They appear slow at the beginning, but as the enemy gains more clicks, they become more and more challenging!

Map

As you adventure, you'll find:

A shop

This is where you can buy items and upgrades. You can buy better movement speed, greater click power, or even a magnet that pulls the click towards you. But, of course, the most valuable item in the shop is the trophy, which you need to buy to win.

A yellow square

The square defines the boundaries for where a click can appear. Every time a click is picked up, it finds a random place to stay in the square, just to be picked up again. There are plenty of tricks you can learn to beat the enemy to the clicks easier. In fact, for reading this, I'll give you one--moving on diagonals is quicker.

A strange pedestal

You'll find sooner or later that it is the enemy level-up pedestal. Every 20 clicks the enemy gets, it runs over to the pedestal to get better stats. After 4 uses, however, the pedestal overloads and powers down. Phew! One more level up, and they would be faster than you.

Behind the Scenes

This is my first attempt at making a game on Pico-8. This is also the first time I've made a game NOT in block coding, so this is a big step up for me. When I started coding this, I started with a very simple version, and as I coded, the ideas just came in. Most of this game was not planned in the slightest, and I just coded whatever came to me in the moment.

Congratulations! A big first step to adventure!

Congratulations on your 1st game.
An incremental game where you're competing against an AI is pretty original.
Would probably be more fun as a 2 players VS game though.
Magnet doesn't work. I'm not saying it's buggy, just that it doesn't help :
If the enemy is ahead of you, using the magnet will just help him get to the mouse cursor faster, and if the enemy is behind, you don't need help...
What would help is the exact opposite powerup : a repulsor that pushes away the item.

Oh, that’s a good idea. I’ll work on it. Thanks for the feedback!

Looking good! Would be nice if it had a little more human-like reaction time to getting new clicks. Also, how about a dash meter upgrade? :)
