Pico Castle is a demake of Cinematronics' Star Castle featuring Felice's anti-aliased vectors and freds72's color support.

The objective of Pico Castle is destroying the Pico Castle by removing its shields and penetrating one bullet into it while avoiding or shooting 3 sparks (4 sparks in Hard difficulty). Destroying Pico Castle gives you a bonus life.

Just like the original game did, this game is time based. the difficulty increases in every 30 seconds (15 seconds in Hard difficulty) and after 5 minutes(2 minutes and 30 seconds in Hard difficulty) the game permanently stays at the maximun difficulty level.

It's not an easy game to master, but it's also very addictive once you did.

Controls :

1.1 patch

  • I realized that the original game don't speed up the cannon's projectile but has pre-firing cooldown which gets shorter as the difficulty increases. so I applied that to make it more faithful.

Faithful to the original including superb dithering !

Nice! I'm embarrassed to admit I forgot the ship in the middle would shoot at me if it could see me, hahaha!

I realize it's not entirely faithful, but it would be a nice quality-of-life improvement to have the option to use dpad-up for thrust.


I always found pressing up to thrust awkward especially with joystick, even real arcade cabinet had a thrust button next to shoot.

But I can add it anyway.


1.2 patch

  • You can now select to thrust with O or up key in title.

  • I found that the game is a bit faster than the original so I decreased the player, bullet, and sparks' speed a bit to fix the phasing issue.

  • Color and thrust key settings are now saved.

게임메이커가 질려서 피코8로 게임을 만들기 시작했습니다. 게임 커뮤니티를 둘러봐도 피코8로 게임 만드는 한국인은 아직 저밖에 없는것 같네요.

모든 기능을 집접 만들어야 한다는 점을 빼면 피코8에 적응하기는 별로 어렵지 않았습니다. 겜메에서 오브젝트 하나로 모든걸 처리하는 느낌이에요.

나중에 피코8로 게임 만드는 강좌를 어설프게라도 작성 해보겠습니다.

Translation for those who wonders : I got bored of game maker and moved to pico8. It wasn't hard to learn except I need to make every features by myself, it's like making everything in single object in Game maker. I looked around Korean communities but it seems I'm the only korean who make pico8 games.

I'll try to write a poor tutorial of making games in pico8 later.

제가 생각하기엔 pico-8이 마이너하고 기능적인 제약도 많고 돈도 안 되다 보니 사람들이 관심이 없나봐요. 유니티라든가 최근엔 메타버스 붐 때문에 로블록스에 관심갖는 사람이 많다보니 상대적으로 여기엔 신경쓰는 사람이 적죠. 로블록스 게임들은 솔직히 여기 있는 게임들보다 재미없는게 대부분이었습니다. 다 무슨 시뮬레이터니 하는 비슷비슷한 제목이랑 내용들이고 목적이 없는 게임들도 많고. 게임은 여기 사람들이 훨씬 더 잘 만드는 것 같아요.

In my opinion, people are not interested in pico-8 because it has minor, functional limitations and no money. There are a lot of people who are interested in Roblox because of Unity or the recent metaverse boom, so relatively few people care about it. To be honest, most of the Roblox games were less fun than the games here. There are a lot of games with similar titles and contents, like a simulator or something, and without a purpose. The games seem to be made much better by the people here.

1.4 patch

  • Fixed Angle_lerp function bug when angle moves between 0 and 360.

  • Castle is now located at exact center.(63.5,63.5)

1.5 patch

  • Found a bug where the ship don't fly straight when reaching full speed and fixed it.

This is awesome - also, a bit hard even on easy mode lol


1.6 patch

  • Fixed some bugs.

  • Added randomized castle shield mode, which randomizes rotation direction and speed of the shields.
