My first attempt at a PICO-8 game.
I've never tried anything like this before, so it's been a fun learning experience.
This is my spooky side scroller hopefully wrapped up by Halloween.
Update 4)
- Adding a fade on death as well as some basic palette twiddling to make it look a little nicer.
- More music because I'm kind of tired of hearing it at this point.
- Spikes and death! Although the collision detection is going to need some major overhaul.
Update 5)
- More interactions
- Starting enemies
- More music
- More map
Update 6)
- Bats! Spiders! Spikes!
- Death!
- Pixel collision!
- If you can get the "potion", you've "won" for now!
Update 7)
- Health!
- End-game and win condition
- Spooky Scary Music!
Update 8)
- Add Easy Mode
- Calling this one ready for Halloween
Here's the "Release Post" https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=45134
Thanks! I'm trying to figure out how to make it a "game". It's still feeling like a tech demo or something.
Very nice, as a platform game with puzzles to solve I think it already is quite a game! It was fun to figure out where to jump to and from, and the interaction with characters and objects was easy to understand. I can imagine more/different kind of puzzles and challenges, maybe moving enemies or platforms, that could come in following levels. Maybe as you go from level to level you are collecting something to complete a set, or just reach the end/exit?
Burned quite a few hours this weekend on this, but it's starting to feel a little more like a game. See "update 6" in the main post for the latest.
I think that you may need easier ways to avoid bats since I died more to them than anything else, very s p o o k y game right now! Hope you finish by Halloween.
The best way to avoid the bats it to lure them in one direction. I added "health" so it's a little more tolerable while hopefully being reasonably challenging.
I'm calling this version the final version (unless I find a bug). Enjoy!
This game is really awesome! I know this is the final version but could you please add a timer for the speedrun because this game is perfect for this kind of challenge and maybe put the dev score? Good job and thank you for this game :D
I was thinking about a timer actually. What do you mean by “dev score”?
The number of hearts remaining and the time you did during your best speedrun attempt. So the players can friendly compete with you.
I added a timer option to the menu. It's off by default but you can turn it on whenever.
Here's my "not that great" test run.
Thank you for this new challenge.
After 4 hours and more than 1,000,000 attempts :P
easy mode: 90.86
hard mode: 101.29
(1 heart remaining in each mode)
I'm sure this score can be beaten.
Best of luck to all and have fun ;)
