My entry for LD46 (Compo)! Created in 48 hours from scratch, mostly as an excuse to mess about with tline and the new pico8 version!
Delve into some ancient ruins following a mysterious voice, but watch out for the encroaching darkness! Keep your torch lit via passing flames and reaching checkpoints as you descend deeper. Avoid spikes, watch out for dowsing waterfalls, master difficult platforming and discover the ancient secret within!
Fairly tricky platforming, so congratulations if you manage to reach the end! Your time will be displayed on completion too if y'fancy speedrunning it!
Controls:
- Arrow keys: Movement
- Z: Jump, Start game
Wow, this is incredibly polished for a jam game. Well done! :D
The graphics are really nice, I like the color palette and the shading, and the music is pretty catchy, too!
The physics and control are spot on, the only complaint that I have is that the player's hitbox feels a bit too big. When colliding with spikes, it seems like the player dies before actually hitting them. I think you should shrink the hitbox by 1 or 2 pixels, so the player actually enters the spike before they die - kinda like what the full version of Celeste does. (I know this is really nitpicky, but it looked weird, so I thought I should mention it) :)
Good stuff! Nice use of the new tline for lighting effects! Overall a great presentation.
While overall the platforming was pretty fun, it did feel a little unresponsive, like there was a random delay at times. If you jump at the very start of the game, you can get out of the map and skip directly to the double jump power up, allowing you to beat the game within a minute.
Impressive stuff for 48 hours!
Pretty good, I wish I could learn how to do lighting like you did.. maybe i'll study this cart to learn
Awesome cart and great LD entry! Looking forward to studying this cart as well! :D
just requested the game on src and found some skips!
also made a (speedrunning) discord for it, feel free to check it out! https://discord.gg/xRgSPwm
after a bit of research, i found a way to crash the game using one easy skip and one really hard trick. info on discord above. otherwise, love the game! we got it down to 57 seconds using a huge skip, and without the skip hasnt really been optimised but i got a 1:45
That was really good even though at first I didn't quite get it. The flame thing is kind of cool, and I like that you die if your flame is out for too long. Not seeing some spikes was kind of annoying, but the bit of trial and error process in avoiding the spikes without dying, with limited sight was fun. The music and the visuals are probably the best I've seen on Pico-8. What is that ending though.
i just beat this on mobile with touch controls because i have no regard for my own personal sanity, and i loved every minute of it. took me about 15 minutes with a couple of retries, and for being a game jam entry i'm astonished at how polished it is; the torch mechanic is great and the story really threw me for a loop in the best way. it was a fantastic experience all around.
the physics are nailed down perfectly and i really appreciated that spikes only hurt you with the pointy side, and the art is beautiful.
i had a lot of fun with this, thank you for giving this to the world!
I enjoyed that!
I got a 1:55 (nomiss)

Been playing this for a few days since I stumbled across it on SRC. Got my time down to 1:35. There's a couple of tiny improvements I didn't manage to pull off in this run, but given the timer only counts full seconds, I'm not sure if they'd knock it down to a 1:34.
Got it down to 1:34 after all.

I like this a lot and it's inspired me to have a go at Ludum Dare 47. Anyway, I enjoyed the game so I made a video about it. :)
Yes incredible, i love it. So bad you don't continue this game to make it longer ;)
