I created a randomized chess, I hope you enjoy it. I thought about this concept when I was trying to find a variant of chess where a newbie could potentially win a very good player from time to time like in the Mario Kart series.
Features:
- Starting board is random for both players. One player could start with 17 queens while the other could have all pawns.
- Which player moves each turn is random.
- When a player tries a capture which of the pieces is captured (attacker or defender) is also random.
- You can play against a friend using the same controller or versus and AI.
- To be consistent with the rest of the game, the AI moves at random.
- The probabilities can be changed in the settings menu. For example if you want to make that captures succeed almost all the time but still fail from time to time you can set it to 90%.
- You can switch off all randomness in the settings menu to play something close to the classic chess.
Wow ... Randomized indeed. While all the correct squares are filled, the pieces that fill them are perfectly random. Hmm ...
I would remove the bip-bop timer of whose turn it is as that definitely slows down the game. As you have space on the edges of the screen, you might just have a coin turn to a different color to show whose turn it is.
Um...
I think I broke it.
So, what I did was I moved a pawn into the corner in classic chess mode, thinking it would turn into a queen. However, it didn't. So I went and selected it, thinking maybe it just needed to be updated, but I got a runtime error. Might want to fix this.
Also, can you make it so that on the first move, pawns have the option to move two spaces, like in regular chess?
Thanks for playing the game and reporting the issue @SeekNDestroy8797!
I updated the cart to fix the pawn bug. It was a 1 character fix...
About the other question: I don't plan to add advanced chess moves to the game as the goal was just to make a chaotic random game not to create a realistic chess game. If I add the double step for the pawn I should add en passe capturing, castling and other advance moves too.
It is super fun! I think my only advice would be to make the combat more advantageous for stronger peices. You could use the D&D style roll+modifier, and the modifier could be the points scored from peice trading. Then a bishop would have a better chance of taking out a pawn than the queen.
Overall great game. However, I have noticed that the AI isn't exactly great at looking ahead or defense. In the regular chess mode, you can actually win without moving any piece other than one pawn.
I don't like this very much, it would be more fun if the turns were made every other turn, because the bot went 6 times in a row and I only played for 1 minute, sorta took out the fun
