About

This game is a vertical shooter with a story. It’s not designed to be very hard - the whole game can be completed in ~5 minutes or so. It was build for Ludum Dare 44, with the theme of "your life is currency".

Story

The year is 2098. Earth’s human population has reached 15.2 billion. Under pressure of dwindling resources, the government passes the ‘greater good’ act. Under this act, families are paid to voluntarily terminate a loved one. As a government worker, your job is to carry out these terminations. The method of choice: 100mg ‘nexcidium’ injection.

Posted this on itch.io, but I want to get it up on the BBS. Hope you enjoy!

Grim story, suicide, even if sheathed in an oily plot of science fiction fantasy.

Might actually happen in the future. More likely ... well ... my Dad said it best about what likely will happen, but it's not a pretty thing he said.

SIGH. Let's all just try to get along.

Neat idea. The third level is just too difficult for me, though!

Thanks for the comments!

@PicoLate, maybe try picking up the Rapid Fire upgrade first? I find that makes the game fairly easy. The powerups definitely aren't balanced as well as I'd like :)

Nice work @epbarger :)

The text before/during each level does a good job of telling some story while remaining minimalistic. One suggestion though - before each level, if you were to make each piece of dialog appear one line at a time (instead of appearing all at once), it might make those moments a little more suspenseful and more impactful (especially in the case of the last scene).

Good call @chrislewisdev, that would definitely be an improvement to the mood!

Love this game, and you pretty much already summed it up! Short game, pretty easy, and a great story. I'm just a bit confused on what the last "kill" was. Why wasn't the 11 year old able to do this? There was one before when the parent concented...

Thanks for the kind words @KnightOfDoom22. I think the idea with the last kill was that the situation of the "parents" offering their kid for injection was a trick to assault/kill the player character. I sort of imagined they were part of some sort of underground resistance against the government program. The dialogue could be much clearer, I limited myself to one page of predefined text boxes to speed up development :)
