Hi all,
Together as "Road Software", Robsoft (of Pico8 Tanks fame) and I have joined forces to create a tribute/de-make of Oh Mummy! There’s a superb version for Pico8 by Hokutoy (which I’m sure many of you will already played) however we’ve tried to take a different path, wanting to create something aligned to the 1984 Gem Software, CPC 464 version (although it does deviate in a few places where we feel we’ve built on the original…).
Coding is from Robsoft, with SFX, music and GFX from me. We’d love to have your feedback – we’ve got plenty more ideas that we’re looking to develop as a team and want to learn as much as we can from the Pico-8 community.
Gameplay is very similar to the original – walk around 4 sides of each box to uncover various items including treasure, golden and guardian mummies, keys and scrolls. To complete a level: find the key and royal mummy, with 5 levels per pyramid.
You can also download the game at itch.io.
Hope you enjoy playing as much as we enjoyed making this.
Cheers,
Road Software
Solid gameplay. Reminds me of Achikoch, one of my favorite NES action puzzle games.
Cheers dw817 for the comments - I'd not heard of Achikoch, although I'm sure I recognise it from the youtube vid. I'll check it out, as it looks like good fun!
It's happened -- I've finally seen a NES game I have /never/ heard of or seen before lol.
@mullerice: good job on this one! I've never played the original (though I do remember Hokutoy's version), but I like your take on it.
I'm also glad you included instructions and stats. Is there a way to view those stats / records at a later time, or are they only stored for the current game?
Thanks for the comments folks (I'd not heard of Achikoch, either)
@enargy - that stats thing is a good call.
Prior to today, I would have said, 'I only have 64 numbers to encode it all in, I already struggled a bit with the player names' but of course since this morning I've come across someone (no names no finger pointing) who is a bit of a whizz at compressing stuff and doing tricksy tricks with Pico... bless you! :-)
I'll definitely think about it - although I'm keen to get the next title out, too. Ha ha.
"Achikoch" is wrong... Maybe it's from an old 8.3 filename? The game's full name is Chiisana Obake: Acchi Socchi Kocchi, which translates to something like "Little Ghost: Here, There, and Everywhere".
Has a really good super retro feel to gameplay. Nicely done.
I like the arcade style highscore name entry too. Thumbs up.
Thanks @Roysterini - that's great feedback!
We found Spudcats had posted a Picoh-Mummy playthrough video on youtube yesterday - we're really flattered/pleased! Seeing someone else play the game has given us some pointers for improvements for future games too, which is fantastic.
Solid. Great fun. Somehow you got the 'speed' right. At least that is my take. But my favorite bit is the inclusion of the stage clear cut screen. Totally arcade! Like playing this game made me have auditory hallucinations of other games being played right next to me. Not really.. but I'm saying I totally can imagine music and sounds coming from other sweet games next to me. The game worked for me! Great work.
Excellent, glad you enjoyed it Rahrahrah! It's great to hear it evoked such strong memories/thoughts for you
Sadly this no longer works, presumably due to a Pico-8 update. It locks up as soon as you press X on the title screen, on any option, on both desktop and Raspberry Pi.
@BlinkyMcGoo - I've just tested on desktop and iOS and all seems to be working fine with v0.2.4 of Pico-8 - hopefully this will work for you now 😁🎮
