This is awesome!
Great job -- love the mechanics, the visuals, and the work that went into the sound. The overall polish is soooo goooood.
I love the visuals. I generally love coffee so this was an easy sell for me.
I see some issues with the UI. It's weird that the button layout shows the ingredients as symbols but the recipe shows them as as text. I immediatly forgot what the symbols mean and wasn't able to complete even one drink at first. It would be nice if the game helped you out. Maybe at least being able to look at the legend during the game?
May I suggest you use the arrow keys to highlight each of the ingredients in turn AND display the ingredient name.
Then you can hit (O) to make that selection. After a-while, the player will know where the ingredients are.
The way it is now you must completely memorize what all the ingredients look like and be prepared to hit =8= different arrow keys within a very short time frame - not an easy thing to do.
Suggest first level not even be timed at all - or make a practice level where the player can get used to how to play with no timer.
Also the idea of using a selection field for the ingredients with the name always appearing.
Visuals are stunning. This is a first class game, just needs easier controls. :)
Hope This Helps !
Thank a lot for your comments!
To anwser your questions about the issue with the button layout. Actually, it was part of the game design.
I thought it would be too easy to litteraly write the name of the ingredients in the button layout, or to show the recipe using the icons.
So I put only very simple recipes in the first level, so you can easily learn which icon match the good ingredient.
But you have a point. Maybe the first level is too brutal. I should, as you advise me, give the possibility to show the name of the ingredients on the layout, or maybe have an untimed tutorial level.
It is the result of a game jam, so I didn't have time to think about all those things ;)
I'm definitely gonna make a better version in the future.
This is amazing. Would you consider updating it or porting it to tic-80? The new crop of retro handhelds is perfect for this kind of game. I find myself sitting here and constantly playing it on my Miyoo or 351v.
Everything about this is awesome. What could go wrong with a game about the best beverage ever? Seriously though, good work. I look forward to future updates!
This is the best Pico-8 game I have ever played! The simple concept of using combinations of ingredients with the d-pad makes this a 10/10! I couldn't recommend anything better.
