I'd like to share my first PICO-8 project. It's a puzzle game of my own design. You need to restore the puzzle by swapping pairs of tiles. The difficulty is that not all tiles can be swapped. It's up to you to discover which tiles can be swapped. Figuring this out is only the first step. The real challenge has then only just begun!

v0.2 After solving the puzzle (within a reasonable amount of moves) you now get a solve key, which grants you entry into the game's Hall of Fame. Capture it. You can reply to this thread with the screen capture. The keys are unique, so don't "re-use" the key of someone else. Furthermore, you really need to solve the puzzle. You cannot cheat by inspecting the source code either.

v0.1 This cart was hacked together in a weekend. It's already playable and quite polished at places, but is not yet finished.

Still on my TO DO list:

  • A celebration tune after solving the puzzle. This will be tough, given that my musical skills are quite limited. I may need to call in the help of my brother here.

I don't understand what the goal of the puzzle is.

Am I supposed to be putting them in order?

Even the help screen just said to "solve the puzzle". Am I being stupid?

The goal of the puzzle is indeed, as you correctly assumed, to order the tiles from 1 to 9. I have omitted this on purpose from the description, as I figure that this will be the first guess of most people. Also, it can be verified by trying it out. I therefore consider it part of the puzzle.

However, if you and many others would rather have the goal explicitly described, I can do that.

...or have a look at the code, in stealth mode like a cheetah. I did, chuckling like when I hacked the basic code of that strip poker on oric atmos, to see the line-art naked girl, many moons ago!
sadly I would never have figured it out myself. your mileage may vary, according to the brains you own. ;)
had a good time trying to figure out though, just lacking stamina. still have to win while (illegally) knowing the rules :P

ha ha, yes, ultrabrite, "cheating" by looking at the code is definitely possible. You can discover the goal and the swapping rule this way. It does not help you to actually solve the puzzle though. However, as there's no line-art naked girl awaiting the persistent puzzler, the incentive to solve the puzzle may be lacking... ;-)
