It could be inspiring!!
Also, I tripped across this video, and thought some of you may appreciate it; especially comparing it with P8's "restrictions."
Rewatching that video was interesting, and got me thinking: wouldn't it be cool if the Pico-8 had something similar to multi-color mode? Yknow, halve the resolution, but bump up the number of colors possible. Ex. double-width-pixel 128x128 with 32 colors! You could even lower the map size or sprite count, to "accommodate" for the "reduced hardware capability". What are your (the community's) thoughts on this?
I find it kinda funny how the Sega Master System's limitations are slightly more fitting for a console of this era, in my opinion.
I think I'll compare side-by-side:
Sega Master System
- 32 colors on-screen - 64 colors available - 256x192 resolution - 64 sprites available - 16x32 max sprite size |
Nintendo Entertainment System
- 16 colors on-screen - 52 colors available - 256x240 resolution (could only see 256x224, due to overscan) - 64 sprites available - 8x16 max sprite size |
I feel like Pico-8 is carrying some of the spirit of the Master System, with its vibrant colors and 2-button layout.
@Rudlin: You mean a 64x128x8 screen resolution? Yeah, and it wouldn't need to cut down the Map Space or sprite sheet at all, due to how drawing a typical screen works.
