It's a lot harder than I anticipated, a good challenge.
What made you settle on 33 turns?
I'm also in agreement with TRASEVOL_DOG, it would be cool to see what fx could work nicely with the mechanics.
Its based off of http://unixpapa.com/floodit. i liked it with a 14x14 grid and 8 colors and that version calculated 33 turns for that config. As for sfx, there is another version of flood it on this forum that has sfx and i felt they were sort of annoying so i left them out.
Nice! Addictive and strangely relaxing. What about adding a restart button? It gets kinda annoying refreshing the browser for your next fix.
