The first PICO-8 Jam is approaching!
Following on from this thread, here's an invite cart to make it legit:
Duration: The Jam will take place from 00:00 PST on the 21st of November 2015 and will finish at 24:00 PST on the 29th. So, it spans 2 weekends and 5 weekdays. You can spend as much or little time on your carts as you like. Tiny silly cartridges are more than welcome.
Theme: As is customary with other jams, a theme will be posted at the start and the goal is simply to make a cart (or some carts) during the jam that reflect your interpretation of the theme. Any type of cartridge is ok: games, toys, demos, music carts or pixels.
Submitting: To submit or update a jam cart before the deadline, just tag it with p8jam1. You can update your cartridge as often as you like before the deadline.
Voting: UPDATE: I'll have a new (but still simple) rating system in place before the end of the jam. Participants will be invited to rate other jam entries on a single scale, and exactly 1 week after the jam finishes, ratings will be tallied.
There will be a small mystery prize for the highest rated cart, but you should enter for glory and honor (or just for kicks).
UPDATE2: the rating system is now live. If you have submitted a p8jam1-tagged cartridge, you'll be able to see the rating interface at the top of any p8jam1 thread.
Rules: Teams / collaborations are allowed, in which case you should nominate one user to be the submitter (and voter). Re-using existing PICO-8 cart material is allowed as long as it is ok by the author, and that the carts are publicly available before the jam starts. Submissions should be mostly new material created during the jam, but it's ultimately up to other participants making ratings to decide what's cool and what's not.
Dev logs: If you want to make posts about your progress, design ideas, or anything else related the jam, feel free to put them in the PICO-8 Blogs section also tagged with p8jam1. Don't be shy!
During the jam, you'll be able to view all carts and posts tagged with p8jam1.
Preeeetty sweet. :D
I want that mystery prize! I bet it's going to be an adorable tiny thing Zep makes himself, hee.
I would like to participate. Not sure I will have the time. Sometime you have to manage some basic considerations (like put food in the fridge). I will try my best. Good luck to everybody. No doubt that we will see many marvelous cartridges. Thanks Zep (please try to answer your mail ;-)
Love the invite cart! <3 _ <3 Hopefully I can find the time to come up with something.
Guys I think so far the PICO-8 Jam #1 Invite cart is winning the votes. It has the most stars and favs out of every p8jam1-tagged cart so far!
The theme is unknow. How can people already start to post tagged carts for the jam?
Love the idea! the ad cart, though, made my head hurt and eyes bleed a little.
que training montage, hoping for some epic entries.
i also see zep might bring christmas eurly this year, wink*
Sweeeeet.
Just got into Pico-8 and I totally love it, so I think I'll try to work on a little something. :)
I updated the voting section -- I'll add a simple rating system before the end of the jam instead of trying to stretch existing BBS functionality to do the job.
Also, for anyone here who is in Tokyo, PICO-8 HQ is open 3pm~11pm Saturday and Sunday if you'd like to join us!
I'm excited to work on a game this weekend! It would be amazing to come to pico pico cafe one day, hope everything goes well!
Remember to re-play through all the games for voting week! A lot of them are in a very incomplete state right now.
Final 24 hours! Everyone get your submissions in before it's too late, even if they're still in an early state!
huh? isn't it over now?? or is there still another day? timezones!! argh!
It says it ends at "24:00" on Nov. 29th. Which means you still have the entirety of the 29th. :D
You would be correct if it said it ended at "midnight" or "00:00" on the 29th, though.
Alright! Submissions time has now concluded, so please refrain from updating your carts until voting has ended.
zep, how's this voting scale work? It goes from 1 to 8 and 8 is the "best", right? No wait, I can poke multiple buttons... Are they added together? Oh... Ohhh, there's 8 of them... Is it a binary byte that gets added together from 0 to 255?! XD Or are you just still working on the mechanism right now? :P
Hey everyone, submissions are in and it looks there are 27 legit entries. The jam rating interface should appear at the top of any p8jam1-tagged post, for users who have also submitted something tagged p8jam1. You can rate your own cart if you like. Ratings will run for exactly 1 week and finish on December 6 at 24:00 PST (the end of Sunday)
This time around there isn't any criterion for voting, or any fancy data processing -- a cartridge's score will just be the average rating. Let's see how it goes and perhaps evolve slightly for the next jam if needed.
@JTE
I added a little fold-out [?] note next to the rating buttons after losing a fight against my crappy ajax code. 8 is best, and only the highest one is counted. So you can set just 1, or fill them up from the left to simulate what the interface /should/ do.
Good luck all!
Cute mosaic, zep. :3 And thanks for clarifying the voting mechanism. :P
I'm happy to be part of the community of the 27: the worshipers of PICO-8 and Zep of course ;-)
I have just finished the papers for the creation of a French not-for-profit organization (1901 act) dedicated to PICO-8. The legal announce will be published soon. We working on an event near Nantes in 2016. The goal is to help people (young and less young) to discover programming... and to make a big coding party.
If you're french or live in France and would like to help us, let me know :-)
If you want only take part to the event, informations will be publish in the next coming months.
That's awesome Jihem. Im French too so let me know if/when you have a website/twitter !
The name of the organization is "PICOSCOPE". We have registered the domain http://www.picoscope2016.fr (for the event). We need a couple of days to put at less a blog online. Actually it's redirected to my personal website (codyssea.com) where you can reach me (in French or in English as you want). Bonne soirée :)
