Description:

Spaceship Run is my very first game for PICO-8.
I am not a game developer, but I wanted to try it out. I hope you like it anyway.
The Code is a mess! Sorry for that!

  • Fly to the right
  • Collect the fuels
  • Try to get as far as possible

The Game feels good, but I had some starting trouble and a unfair(?) loosing, so this is more a tester review than a game critics.

Your Controls description seem missleading, when I start the game I tryed "up","down" to start. Then I tryed "x", "c" (keyboard, I'm a PC) to finaly press the right ( ;D ) button. Suprisingly this moved the rocket up AND right. As left moved the rocket up AND left.

I love that I do not have to mind landing speed, hard landing on a fuel canister is not killing me. The smoke particles are fine. The Fuel canister is clear to recognise.
The moving/flight direction is clear, too the scrolling right, but not scrolling left. The bottom space is danger, after the starting plattform disapeared.

I played only minutes, and my last flight was lost because of an empty fuel tank. BUT I was falling on one fuel canister! but the game ended in flight. This was a little bit frustrating... unfair, I might had had a chance to survive.

Never mind, nice first pico game.

You said it's your first pico game and you have a messy code, but in case you might add some things to this game:


Some indicators would be nice to have. When I fligh high above, outside the sceen and have no Idea where I am. Like a triangle on the screen top, growing with further distance.

A helping indicator on the right screen, where the next fuel canister comes.
A second resource like oxygen, where the player is in desperate need to plan ahead what's worth to change flight direction.
A third resource for highscore points, or a distress call where you need to fly to the top and beyond outside the screen till you match a hight with the spaceship out in space.

All these ideas are for more challenging the player, but keep the player free in desicion making, how hard he wants to get highscore points.

Or you could add some background planets, galaxies, aliens ships. But just cosmetics. So it feels like a relaxing spacetravel with tankstopps.

or just keep your game as it is.

You are now a game developer it is your choice :D

I've edited the description for the controls. Is it still misleading?

The game needs to indicate when the spaceship is outside the top of the screen and must never leave the left edge of the screen. I might implement that later.
