ROLLOUT

A strategy game about rolling dice

by lights+blue

Rollout is a strategy game where all the actions you take in the game are determined by rolling dice. This can include attacking your enemies, building up defences or getting more dice, every one of these actions are preformed by rolling dice.
The game takes roughly 30 minutes to play, and theres no save data (i gave up on it)
Now select START on the menu to begin!

  • Look around -- - Arrow keys
  • Progress menus - (X) / [X]
  • Go back a menu - (O) / [Z]

On your turn, you will have two opportunites to roll dice, before the enemy's turn where all the enemies on board attack and travel towards the d100 at the center (defend it!).
To roll the dice on your turn, you will need to press X to reach the SELECT phase. Here, you can select a kind of dice with < / > , and how much of that dice you want to roll with ^ / v.
You can then press X again to target where you want to roll your dice, and then X again to roll the dice at where you targetted. You can target dice towards landing on or near enemies, or on the 4 shop spaces (rooms with labels above them and brown details on the floor) in order to get more dice to use.
Do keep in mind that the dice already out on the board get weaker every turn (however there are ways to stop this).
I would recommend that you either have your dice target an enemy (one of the red board game pieces) or land on a shop space (one of the spaces with brown on the floor and a label above it.)
There is more information on specific concepts in the game in the INFO menu which can be found by pressing (O) / [Z] a few times during gameplay.

Most of whats in this game I made at around October, November 2024. However now I wanted to polish the game up to be ready to be released here. This is by far the biggest PICO-8 game I've made, taking up almost 8 thousand tokens and most of the spritesheet, and may have a few bugs... maybe. If you encounter one, please tell me.
I've also done a few things with music I haven't seen that much in other PICO-8 carts, such as dynamic music and something involving chords...

and also credits here

  • Heracleum, who added the code for the splash screen as well as tidying up a bit of my code
  • PICO-8 (obviously)
  • Sprite2sFont by dw817 for creating fonts
  • Aseprite for sketching up ideas and doing most of the pixel art for the game
  • Blender (I used it for the cart image because there's no way I can use perspective that well)
  • A few code editors (notepad++, vscode)

.

CHANGELOG

  • Added a splash screen effect (thx Heracleum!)
  • Removed SAVE button from menu
  • Modified SELECT menu visuals
  • Fixed a typo saying ammount instead of amount

enjoy!!

OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!! I like soooo much this game!!!! i haven't played it, but it seems quite good! i like that there are more and more good game in PICO-8. If this gets featured, it will be really AWESOME!

P.D.: I played a bit the game and i don't understand how to play xD.

Thanks for playing, wondering what part of the game you haven't figured out yet?

Nice original concept, great music and polish! I couldn't figure out that I needed to press up to actually select dice the first time I played. I think getting this in the hands of some play testers and watching how they interact (without telling them what to do) could be quite helpful.

Agreed, when I make games, I normally fall short at making tutorials, and I should probably have my games playtested a bit so that they control intuitively. I've also visually reworked the dice selection menu a bit (just added some left/right arrows and a +/- on the up/down arrows), hopefully that should help indicate how to navigate the selection menu.

This is amazing! I have never seen a concept like this before. It takes a while to learn, but when you do, it's really fun! Good job!

thx!

I lost on turn 19 in normal mode, it seemed impossible to keep up. It does feel fun and I especially like the music and sound, but I still feel like I must be missing something. I only ever had 3 dice available, of the first two kinds, and I don't understand what the "Chance 0/16" or "Tetra 3/22" texts are supposed to mean, I gather I can increase by rolling those kinds of dice but unsure if I need to roll them in that space, or what, and they seem to change every turn so not sure how to meet that goal. Just hoping to provide some useful feedback.

The way that you can get more dice is by rolling dice on the rooms that have labels above them and brown details on the floor (the shop rooms). At the end of each turn, the game counts how many pips are on the dice in the room, and adds it to the x in the X/15. The dice name is the dice that you get when the X surpasses the number on the right. Hope that helps!

Got to round 38 in easy mode. At around 25 or 30 it became quite hard to keep gaining dice, as more and more enemies came in. I did witness an enemy with 79 health, which was crazy. I had 4 cubes, 2 tetras, 3 octas, and 2 tri's, so rolling dice was always satisfying. (Unless they all bounced out of the room I was aiming for... lol) Awesome game, I love the visuals
