Micro Dig Deep is a retro demake of Miner: Dig Deep, an old favorite Xbox Live Arcade indie game.

You are in search of the worlds largest diamond. In this procedurally generated mine, there's ore to discover and sell for upgrades, but don't get stuck and be sure to watch out for falling boulders in the dark! If you do get stuck, there is a "Retreat!" option in the Pico8 menu to get you back to the top.

Upgrades

  • [8x8]
    Torches increase your lamp light.
  • [8x8]
Ladders build a climbable section up to 4 tiles high, as long as they have already been mined
  • [8x8]
Elevators are expensive but they dig down 60 tiles to allow you to zip up and down very quickly
  • [8x8]
The coveted drill. Dig much faster (and get a new fancy hat).
  • Plus lamp upgrades, pick upgrades, pack upgrades, and more!

This game isn't short: it could take hours to get to whatever is at the bottom of this mine.

Good luck down there, and check out Miner: Dig Deep, recently re-released on Steam!

This work was coded in collaboration with an AI.

I think you messed up the ui, the jump and dig buttons are swapped around compared to what you put on the game. Very cool game otherwise, love it!

Ha, good catch. Fixed, and thanks for playing!

This is great!

Though rocks don't fall? It seems they can just be dug through here, where in the original they were a hazard and could crush you.

And while I'm not sure if A Game About Digging a Hole was inspired by Miner: Dig Deep, it was clearly inspired by these sorts of games. I loved Miner: Dig Deep on the XBOX 360, and it's also historically significant for gaming history since it was a huge viral hit and the developers (two brothers, I think?) made a ton of money from it charging only $1 a download. Basically, everyone that owned an XBOX 360 bought it, and that added up! I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1 was the other huge hit for $1 on the XBOX 360. Not sure which came first, but they were both immensely popular, and then largely forgotten. And they're both back on Steam now, which is cool. Prior to the XBOX 360, digging games like this were popular in Flash on the web (Specifically Motherload, and all it's clones), and much simpler examples go back to the early personal computer days. More modern versions have appeared on mobile, many as trashy ad inflicted and microtransaction infested games. But A Game About Digging a Hole seems to be rekindling interest in this sort of game (and it's unique for being a 3D version of the genre), so in addition to clones, I'm hoping to see some other cool stuff inspired by it.

One of the fun things about being old is seeing new generations experience games for the first time, and especially the new twists on old games. :)

There are plenty of other digging games on Steam, perhaps inspired in some way by these classic ones...

Thanks folks!

Normal rocks don't fall, but boulders do. Watch out!

Saving this would be really tricky since the mine goes hundreds of blocks down. I'd love to find a good solution for that if anyone has any bright ideas.
