Description:
The idea for Picochi came from my college days. Back then, many classic RPGs like Dragon Quest only allowed players to move one tile at a time. I first implemented this concept in RPG Maker and found it quite enjoyable, which inspired me to bring it to PICO-8.
In this game, you control a white Mochi character, using jumps to overcome obstacles and reach the portal to advance to the next level. Be careful not to fall into the sea, or you'll have to restart the current level!

Controls:
⬆️⬇️⬅️➡️ - Move one tile
🅾️ - Jump two tiles

Fun little game - would love more levels and mechanics!

It is a bit like a sokoban where you are the box. It uses its simple premise well I think. As an enjoyer of odd takes on sokobans and strategic classic roguelikes this is good stuff. I do personally think the music gets a bit repeatative after a while but it does have an uobeat tone that is well suited to the visuals.

It might be neat to have spaces with properties which alternate every time you take a step. For example you could have a staircase which changes orientation from left-right to up-down every tine you take a step, or a whirlpool which is only present every other step. Something like this would require that the player plans out if they will arrive to it on an even step or odd step.

I found that last puzzle with the cracked tiles clever. I could imagine combining those tiles with the whirlpools could lead to some interesting puzzles since the whirlpool could put you on one of four paths that alter how you have to move across the tiles.

That little golf ball is sooo cute!
