Hello PICO community!
I recently met Pico8 and was fascinated by it. At first, I just played games, but then YouTube suggested a video on how to program for this console...
So, I’d like to introduce my first game for Pico8 (and my first game ever). It’s a simple puzzle like "Flood It," but with more advanced mechanics.
Your goal in the game to grab more field than others. There is a bunch of missions available and practice mode (you have to unlock it).
Game has a minimal retro style.
I’d love to hear your feedback and advice. The game is still in development, and I hope to add more features (maybe even skills?).
Happy playing!
Features
- Campaign with 21 missions
- Special powers (unlockable)
- Different arenas (unlockable)
- Practice mode (unlockable)
- Infinitive mode (unlockable)
- Up to 4 players in skirmish mode
- Top scores (per mission, per arena, per run, etc)
Controls
- Arrows for selecting color
- Z/X to apply

Cool concept! It's easy to understand but it can become quite strategic especially when you understand that you can deny your opponents colours as you choose before them. The presentation is also quite nice, I like the text transitions.
The only thing I would like to be changed would be for the new campaign option in the menu to not overwrite your previous save, or at least not without a confirmation. I got to level 10 before getting a break and accidentally lost my progress this way when I got back :/
@hiyaa thank you for the feedback. Absolutely agree with you, I'll change it for the next release.
This is quite fun, but I feel that there are times that a level starts and you are in a hopeless position against the enemies. I assume that the squares in the level are simply assigned randomly and that a "winning path" doesn't always exist?
I don't really understand the new feature of not being able to use a certain colour
@phil Yes, I'm planning to refactor field generation, but it's not a main priority for now.
You may be unable to select a color in two situations:
- The color is occupied by another player
- The color is linked to a power that’s charged, but you haven’t unlocked that power yet (see details below)
Typically, when you first encounter a "Master of <power>," you need to defeat them to unlock their color. During this fight, if the color associated with their power is charged, you won’t be able to use it until the master activates it (see the right side of the screen for status). However, once you win, you’ll gain access to that power.
What is a power?
Powers become available as you unlock them throughout the campaign. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see “powers” displayed as icons (like batteries). When powers are charged (such as Orange and Green in the example), they become active. For instance, if the White player uses the orange color, they’ll capture orange tiles (even diagonally!) and immediately gain an extra turn. This can even allow combos with multiple charged powers in a row. Powers charge when the related color is played, with four uses needed to fully charge a power.
@horneds Thanks for the detailed explanation. I saw the computer do a diagonal capture and then spent ages trying to work out why it wasn't possible for me.
I'm really glad I've stumbled upon this game while I was browsing through new releases here on Lexaloffle. Absolutely loved it and the idea behind it. The difficulty curve seems very reasonable. 10/10, the video is coming Monday or Tuesday :)
Tell me if there are any links you would like to promote, because you have nothing linked to your profile.
@lastofavari WOW, I'm your subscriber (even thought to write you and present SW, but wasn't sure the game was worth it). There is nothing to promote, but thank you for the warm response. Looking forward to see the video!
Out of memory on the level introducing bombs trying to grab the blue nuke in the center.
Fun game through! Finished the campaign, looking forward to more games!
