This is cool. Looks so much like an Atari 2600. It reminds me of Phoenix and there is a great Pico version: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=44727
Doh! You wrote that too!!
Pretty faithful to original, @pahammond. I have the original here, I'm playing it now. Let me compare.
A few things. The splash explosion on the ground of the player NOT being hit, which is not in the original, is a bit distracting.
The original game would let you hold down the firing button and you could shoot automatically.
Your shot is faster than the original, that makes your game a bit easier than the original.
Other than that a nice Pico-8 edition. And yes this was one of my favorite Atari 2600 cartridges.
I really enjoyed this and made a video for my channel here:
Great recreation! I actually have a cartridge of this same game (for the Atari VCS) that I still play, and it is quite accurate!
Edit: my best score right now is 950! those darn orange things that undergo mitosis when you shoot them screwed me over!
Edit #2: 1090! Woohoo! I can't stop playing this!
Check out the Playdate version here. https://oscarbraindead.itch.io/onebit-demon-attack-playdate
https://play.date/dev/ can load it.
@Dunard, the playday version looks great. The pseudo-3D reminds me of the old Buck Rogers arcade game. Really well suited to the mono display.
