I am working on compressing .p8 files.
That's all you need to know.

Currently it is only saving characters by only advancing tokens once.



.p8 is the plain text version of the cart, and .png is a compressed format that is also a valid image and thumbnail at the same time. Because of things like png file headers and extra picture info not in the p8 file, it is reasonable to assume you could get slightly better compression than the png format, but you won’t get much more.
What I don’t get is what exactly you are trying to achieve ? Is a few % gain worth losing compatibility with the pico-8 ecosystem in your case ?


It's mainly for fun. And I did realize that .png files compress much better than mine does.
