Shape of Mind is a simple puzzle game similar to Solitaire card games. Connect shapes by dragging them on the board. Shapes of the same color won't connect. You can move strips of connected shapes by grabbing the top-most shape of a strip. Drop shapes onto the Dreamer to begin a Halo. Shapes in the Halo cannot be removed. Once a Halo is complete the shapes will disappear. Complete three Halos to clear all the shapes and win the game!

About

This game was created as part of the A Game By Its Cover Jam 2022. The goal was to create a game based on of the cartridge covers from the Famicase Exhibition 2022. The cover to Shape of Mind was created by Agustin Crisostomo.

The game was written and designed by Krystian Majewski, an Independent Developer and the host of the Lazy Devs Academy video channel. The entire development process was livestreamed.

The music was composed by Gruber Music.

The game is written entirely in Pico-8.

I agree with Ummmm_ok, it is very pretty. Super relaxing and fun.

Love the animation!

A fantastic, relaxing (most of the time) game. Everything works extremely well and so much thought has been put into every aspect of the game. The presentation is top notch.

Are all the games winnable ? Maybe add an option to select the random seed ?

@phil Thank you. There might be some unwinable boards. But a vast majority is solveable. If you find a board that you suspect is unsolveable, please post it. Seed manipulation is coming in a future update.

I was going to post that #13486 was unsolvable but I eventually managed it!

Sometimes it just flows and other times you really have to plan ahead. Great game

Is there a maximum amount of shapes for a halo? in the tutorial I've managed to create a whole length of shapes but it was rejected when I tried to send them.
I had to break the string into shorter length to be accepted.

@Bloodbane Yeah a Halo is always exactly 6 shapes. Might allow longer Halos in the future.

Amazingly well done! I usually don't enjoy puzzle games but this is great! :)

28523 might be impossible

I love it !

Great! Gives some Onirim vibes

Very beautiful game, and uncharacteristically relaxing for a PICO8 game. Polished, clever and one of a kind. It really matches the AGBIC entry's vibe as well.

@Tatery1 Yeah 28523 is one of the unsolveable ones.

Just a heads-up, 25009 is unsolvable.

Confirmed. I'm working on a way to eliminate unsolvable seeds. Probably coming in V3.

Found a strange bug of sorts.

I couldn't put a string down and when I went to menu and started a new one the blue tile was still there.
Hope this helps! Very relaxing game.

3275 is impossible
26038 too.

is it on purpose that almost all boards can be solved with halos of periodic colors? as in [yellow-blue-yellow-blue-yellow-blue] or [yellow-green-yellow-green-yellow-green] or [yellow-blue-green-yellow-blue-green] i think unwinnable boards can be fixed by creating the set with constraints in mind, like, create a shape for every combination of color and attachments

they can also almost always be solved with [acabac] patterns, alongside the mentioned [abcabc] and [ababab]

Ohhhhh I LOVE this. Thank you so much!

i cant get it out of my head!

@D0S81 Please don't use ChatGPT code especially if you don't understand it. The code it gave you is complete trash.

Generally, I haven't come across many Solitaire games with solveability indicators. I think for two reasons:

  1. Understanding if you are stuck is kinda part of the skill of the game

  2. The way you get into unsolvable positions may be wildly unintuitive and disruptive. You'll be playing the game and suddenly it says you've lost.

It is better if players come to the conclusion that they are stuck on their own. But I might be wrong here. Doing a simple piece-based solvability check after a halo completion might be something worth trying.

Yet another gem by Krystman.
Puzzle-games are really not my cup of tea but this one grabbed me from
the very first moment and its highly addictive (just one more...).
To idly to mention that everything is polished to top notch and
reduced to the max at the same time.
And i really appreciate the mouse support!

a cool game to relax

one thing that bugged me is the relation btw the direction of stack cards and the halo. that is i assume the top card, when turning into the halo, will became the right most card. turns out i was wrong (and i was left confused w/ a few first puzzles to the point that i think they are unwinnable).

my two cents: instead of making card's symbol (disk, cross, 4-pointed star) looks identical in both up-down direction, make it asymmetry, e.g., pointing-up arrow, 5-pointed star, a peace symbol.

This is a phenomenal game. It really suits the platform and is a joy to play on my handheld.

i wasnt able to find a solution for the seed 8485 ive always just been one off from solving the first halo

I made a stick. Now what.
