On my system (OS X), F9 is Exposé and is captured by the OS before PICO-8 gets it. I've had this keybinding for years, and changing it would be a pain. Can I remap the "save video" key, or trigger it in some other way?
Unfortunately, that doesn't do it either, at least not on my keyboard. I ran into the same issue but as I basically never use that OSX function it was simple enough for me to remap it to free up F9, but it will presumably be a recurring issue for OSX users.
I'm having similar trouble on my Chromebook Pixel 2. All of its F-keys are bound to other functions and I can't seem to unbind them at an OS level. So I'm stuck muting my volume when I try to toggle recording on. :(
It would be really great if there was a way to rebind recording in Pico8.
EDIT: Turns out I'm dumb and you can totally disable the F-keys being bound to other actions by default in ChromeOS, my mistake! You can toggle it under [chrome hamburger settings icon] > Settings > Keyboard Settings > Treat top row of keys as function keys.
fn+F9 works for me.
I also use FunctionFlip http://kevingessner.com/software/functionflip/
yeah, the save to desktop takes ~/Desktop as standard -- I might need to fix that. But as a work-around, create ~/Desktop
I've aliased F6..F9 to F1..F4 for 0.1.2 as a quick solution (F4 doesn't do anything annoying, right?), but have wish-listed customisable keys for later versions -- this is also needed for custom keyboard controls.
