Another little project my brother and I have been working on. We are huge Cave Story fans, so building a demake was kind of a childhood dream come true. Never ceases to amaze me how much can be done within the (wonderful self-imposed) limitations of the Pico-8 engine.

There is a thing that is bothering me... When I enter a door, I lose the heart upgrade...

Thanks all! I appreciate that. And @betoraposa, you're absolutely right. One of the many small bugs I forgot to root out. :) I'll do a bug fix round in a week or two and polish the last few details.

Great job! I really love Cave Story, and this demake is a perfect homage to it.
Apart from the exit to the first cave killing me, probably due to no collision exit being called when I killed one of the monsters while being effectively inside it, this is amazingly true to the original.
Amazing job, feels like an extremely faithful demake. Looking forward to your future Pico-8 projects!
After going through the first door the picture scrolled to a black screen and I couldn't do anything more.

It's incredible that this game can be de-made into Pico-8! I would love to see the community de-make more games!
This is awesome. Cave Story is my favorite game of all time and this is just... wow... the amount of detail and accuracy to the original is stunning.
A few things:
- If a weapon upgrade shard gets trapped in the level geometry, it will keep making sounds
- Life maximum is not preserved between rooms, and in fact the container will reappear again in the First Cave
- Continuing to hold left/right after pressing down to enter a doorway will make you slide
A few simple fixes for my sanity:
- There's a missing tile to the right of the very first door of the game.
- Holding jump enables you to hop in place, the jump should be based on a key-down event, not on key-held.
- The water surrounding the door to the polar star is inescapable if you fall in. This isn't accurate to the actual game. I believe there's an angled tile on the left side of the moat (lack of a better term)
Otherwise, I think the game looks great and I'm excited you guys are making one of my favorite games of all time (as you can see from my avatar).
Get polar star, shoot the door, can't go in. Did this used to go further and some update to Pico8 broke it?
With no explanation of how to play or what to do, I don't think I am getting the full extent of what everyone is so amazed about. I can't figure out how I am supposed to get past the first level.
If you fall in the water next to the hermit gunsmith's house there is no escape, please fix this.

This is really bad. No explanation no nothing. How can I get out of the very first level?
@kudorgyozo as howlermiller explained, it's a demake of Cave Story (Doukutsu in Japan). I recommend giving it a try if you haven't yet, and you can't get out because the cart's incomplete.
