This is my very first game in Pico-8.

I made this game based on the original cave driver tutorial from Dylan Bennett on the fanzine Game Development with Pico-8.

This work have a bunch of features that i had in mind, thinking about how to make this a fun game. Also a little bit of hallowinish.

Features

  • Enemies
  • Collectible (coins)
  • Random effects
  • Animations
  • Title screen
  • Persistent Score

Collectibles

[8x8]

Try to collect coins for increase your score!
But be carefull, every 5 coins you collect, you acquire an effect:
You can be heavy, boost your speed, or become a rainbow and destroy enemies.
You cannot acquire another effect if you are already altered, so, the 5 coins that you need starts to count when you become normal.

Score

Every 10 coins = 1point,
Every second survived = 1point,
Every enemy killed = 5 points
Your final is calulated by: Survive points * Coin points + 1 + Enemy points
So, all matters!

Enemies

This cave is haunted! you can found:

Awful spiders

[8x8]

These spiders hangs on top of the cave and crawl down to your doom!
You can pass through the spiderweb

Haunty ghosts

[8x8]

These ghastly puffballs floating around in sine-wave are nothing but mean! Try not touch them.

Music

Not now! I am learning how to make music yet.

You did a really nice job with this! I love the coin and hazard additions, and the controls feel really solid and much less floaty than a lot of these kind of games. Well done!

Nice flappy game! Great job on overall game feeling!

Thank you everyone for your warm comments!
Today i wondering about update the game.
My little brother gives feedback to me, askig to add skins to the game.
The ideas are:

  • Pterodactyl
  • Skullbat
  • Flying fish
  • Flying frog
  • Bat frog
  • Flying Chupacabra (the Mexican mythological creature)

And make those skins ulockables by score

Also, by feedback from a friend of me i made lanterns instead of coins, and also candlesticks(kind off haha, still learning pixelart)
I think any of this change fits more into the context of the game, and gives more "hallowen-vibes".
I'm wondering which one of these sprites looks better.

[8x8]
Candlestick
[8x8]
Lantern

I know, halloween is over at this point, but I still want to make more things on this little project until the next halloween.
What do you think? It's any feature you wanna see on the game?

Fun little game, got 224 as my highscore.
