[this probably isn't a bug but I don't know where would be a better place to post it to]
I just downloaded pico-8 but I can't get it to work. Or, basically, I can get it to open, but it automatically opens as fullscreen [which I don't want] and then I can't exist fullscreen or quit the app. I had to turn off my computer to get out of the app. I can't use "alt+enter" to toggle fullscreen because my keyboard doesn't have "alt+enter", it has option (same as alt) but enter? what button should I press instead? will "option+return" work on mac? or can I change what the keyboard shortcut is somewhere without opening the app?
Also, "ctrl-Q" was not working for some reason, I couldn't quit the app that way, which is worrying because "ctrl-Q" should have worked since I have those buttons on the keyboard. "escape" did work to toggle between the viewscreens in pico-8 which is apparently what it's set to do, however, I will say it might be nice if it actually let you get out of the app... surely there's another key command that could be used to toggle, so that you can actually use esc to get out?????
There's definitely no way I'll want to open the app if I can't even get out of fullscreen or quit it...
I recommend read pico-8_manual.txt. It is in pico-8 folder.
There are a lot to learn reading it. Your questions an more.
I did take a look at the manual actually! This is what it said:
////////////
ALT+ENTER: Toggle Fullscreen
ALT+F4: Fast Quit (Windows)
CTRL-Q: Fast Quit (Mac, Linux)
CTRL-R: Reload / Run / Restart cartridge
CTRL-S: Quick-Save working cartridge
CTRL-M: Mute / Unmute Sound
ENTER / P: Pause Menu (while running cart)
Player 1 default keys: Cursors + ZX / NM / CV
Player 2 default keys: SDFE + tab,Q / shift A
To change the default keys use the KEYCONFIG utility from inside PICO-8:
> KEYCONFIG
////////////
As you can see, the manual says to toggle fullscreen use "ALT+ENTER". I have an alt/option key but no enter key. The manual doesn't say whether "option+return" will do the same thing. The manual also says to fast quit use "CTRL-Q" which I tried. It did not work.
You can edit the pico-8 config file:
Windows: C:/Users/Yourname/AppData/Roaming/pico-8/config.txt
OSX: /Users/Yourname/Library/Application Support/pico-8/config.txt
Linux: ~/.lexaloffle/pico-8/config.txt
Thanks so much! I tried that (ofc replacing "yourname") but got back that no such file or directory exists... ?
I think I tried "cmd-Q" as well, but I don't remember. I can give it a try though...
ah, "cmd-Q" worked! Thanks so much! So it was written into the manual wrong.
okay, and "option-return" worked too, I've now managed to get it out of fullscreen! :)
I probably would've tried that earlier but I got kind of thrown for a loop when "ctrl-q" didn't work.
to find the directory with the configuration file, type folder config
in pico-8’s command prompt.
I always type shutdown
in the command prompt to quit, for nostalgia’s sake and to make sure I get a warning if I forgot to save!
