one note about emuelec – their banner note is strange. free software can absolutely be sold (by itself, in a bundle, on a CD at the time), that’s part of the freedom to distribute it. the catch is that nobody or no corporation could make profits from that, because any buyer inherits the same freedom to redistribute it, so there is no exclusivity that creates scarcity of supply.
emuelec’s readme on github clarifies the situation: the program itself is free software, but not all cores or engines, so that’s the reason why the assembled package is not permitted to be sold (or otherwise redistributed freely).
