An homage to our favorite guy, the one and only Emil Grubak Schmalfeldt ❤️

Made by four friends on a rainy day in Odense, Denmark on the 24th of September, 2022.

Credits & Thanks

To crank out a fun game in a single day, we build upon the engine and assets from Harold's Bad Day by @biovoid. This game would not have been possible without it!

The Team

  • Christian Kudahl (code, design)
  • Andrew Skjellerup (design)
  • Jeppe Due Hunsdahl (music, sfx)
  • Kasper Meyer (art, janitorial work)

Nice work guys!

It took me a bit of getting used to the physics changes as I'm obviously much more used to the gravity & swimming in the original game, but once I did things got a bit easier. Still, there were a few challenging levels in there, but nothing too frustrating. Loved the addition of the spikes and the wandering creature.

No idea who Emil Grubak Schmalfeldt is - I guess he is a friend of you guys?

Now I need to put those level names through a translation tool! :)

For the English speakers, the title of the game is:

Emil's Journey: Out and Home Again

And the level names (warning, Google Translate):

this is where Emil lives
direction due north
through thorns that sting
and on crumbling paths
the sky is white and blue
is it safe to go?
the wind dies down
the burial mound sighs
enemies on earthen ramparts
rusty swords and shields
Emil only sees the gold hat
beautiful sight at the top
exhausted he trots
and in the sea he buries himself
in the depths he is and will be
and if he doesn't beep
he looks home again

Emil he was looking for
with lights and lights
over stick and stone
the long worn legs
the challenges were bad
but now he was home

Do I spot some hidden levels there?

Thank you so much for giving it a go, @biovoid! And for writing such a cool game — the code base was a pleasure to work with :)

Emil is indeed one of our friends, who couldn't be there at this particular game jam. So we decided to make a game about him (the blue/white striped shirt represents a local football team he loves).

As for the title of the game, we borrowed the subtitle from the Danish version of The Hobbit: Or, There and Back Again. Each verse throughout the game describes an aspect of the journey, like struggling with the wind while his legs are getting tired.

Maybe we'll do a proper English translation eventually, but honestly, I never expected anyone to play, except for ourselves — so it was a pleasant surprise! Thanks again for trying it out :)

PS:

The Google translations are actually pretty close! And yes, there absolutely is some hidden levels in there, you can access by exiting your home after the end screen. There's a second ending where we actually incorporated the night setting with the fireworks 🎆

Yep, once I saw the extra level names, I went back and played it again to find the secret levels. It only took me about 20 minutes to get to the first house, but the secret levels took me another 15 minutes - they were brutal! But I got there:

That's a really impressive time, @biovoid! We'll have to try to beat that ourselves…
