Based on a game my brother and I collaborated on a long while back, mostly to experiment with writing music.
Enjoy!
Update 8/13/2023:
- Added the excellent suggestion to make being closer to the enemy do more damage.
- Added sound effects
I haven't played the whole game, @jahndis, however I think you should do more damage to the center enemy if the player is closer to them. And less damage if you are farther away.
@dw817 That is brilliant. I put it on an exponential scale as well so the higher risk really feels rewarding. Now, if you can squeeze in close without getting hit, you do some serious damage. Also fixes an issue with some of the early levels feeling tedious.
I tried it out on infinite, and got up to 5000 before I got bored. I didn't get the sense that there was any meaningful difference in each battle. I dodged in exactly the same way and none of the shots were even close.
Yeah, this definitely isn't a great example of effective procedural game play, as the infinite mode kind of boils down to "sameish" bosses. But to be honest, it wasn't really the goal for this project. It was a game I knew I could whip out quickly, have a little fun with, and get some more pico-8 practice under my belt.
quite addictive! do the bullets follow you or am i just an idiot who keeps running into them?! great game well done..
Each boss is composed of randomly selected patterns, one of which will try to shoot at your location. Glad you enjoyed!
Really cool! The endless mode was the most impressive, i also like how the more you are clones to the enemy, the more damage you deal. It would be could to remove the health bar and show the player the health on the enemy itself. Ex. it getting smaller, other than that, really cool game!
