-- HISTORY
Across the river is a remake of a game I made 2 years ago with Twine
My initial goal was to learn to make narrative games, but as you can see it was a failure ^_^
I was thinking the game deserve a more graphic version but was too lazy to do it, but now with pico-8 everything is possible in few hours :D
I won! 27 moves!
here's how:
it was hard, thank you for the game
25! But I cheated. I wrote a program. :)
Sublime creation Benjamin.
(Here is my "PikaScript" program for solving it btw, including the 25 move solution if anyone cares. http://codepad.org/6ge6i6zi )
Lol I used a script myself to build the problem.
I was just changing small details in rules until I found a problem with a complexe solution.
I was not sure on how you could find a <27 moves solution so I went back to my old solver code and realize I forgot a part in both the Twine version and this one. The hunter must be "empty-handed" to lift the washing machine which means no gun on his side.
It seems difficult to implement a graphics feedback for this, as the hunter dont hold the gun when you're on the same side, so I guess I wont change the current version. I'll just set the new highscore to 25 :D
Ah. I did wonder how you came up with such a complex set of rules. Well it is definitely difficult enough already even without that last hunter rule. I probably sat over an hour altogether with my six year old trying to solve it before he got tired and I gave up and wrote that script. The animations are awesome. Pixel blood is fun! :)
A beginners version with a smaller set of rules would be a hit with the kids. I imagine one could even make up a longer story consisting of several stages, with more and more difficult tasks. That could ease players into it. Might make a nice phone app. But like all neat ideas, there probably are ten of those already. Ok, I am digressing. Again, good job, like with all your Pico-8 creations!
And there I fought I was smart for getting 27 moves, another rule was a bit too much!
A beginners version would be nice, but I'm not sure it would be pleasant to make a harder one with even more rules.
29 moves! And I'll leave it at that. That was quite the nut to crack.
I am way too dumb for puzzles games, but I really enjoyed that title screen theme.
Had problems with the hunter and the gun. Once he ran from the cabbage to the boat.
Just randomly discovered this one... so brilliant. Haven't solved it yet, though!
Geistvonpa, the solution works but MAN you have to really read it carefully. This kind of puzzle is MENSA quality ! Top notch difficulty ! Very challenging for the brain.
Excellent ability to rewind so you don't have to start all over.
I'll give you two hints (these are really needed to be known by everyone)
- You can put the RIFLE in the washing machine.
- The monkey HATES the wolf.
Other than that, it's common and comical sense. Think of cartoon logic and the laws of physics and there you have it.
Just wanted to mention how funny I thought this game was. As soon as I saw the title and then the boat, I knew it was goin to be a version of the old goat and wolf across the river riddle... then I saw the washing machine... the monkey, then I found out I could pick up the gun and shoot all the poor animals.
Great game, this was hilarious.
Found a glitch: if you put the washing machine in the boat, then scare the hunter in,the washing machine floats and doesn't move with you, yet you can still put things in it.I used it and did the game in 6 or 7 moves.

Awesome game, spent some time but finally was able to solve!
Then I read about this glitch and was able to confirm is still there as described by PixsoLo33
Please help. I've got the gun on the other side but the hunter still does'nt want to go into the boat.

Quite the puzzle, figuring out what happens next after you leave. Pretty good game!
Great game! I solved it in 35 but clearly did some useless moves :)
31 moves. Not optimal. But what a great way to implement a puzzle! Loved it.
This was probably an unintended interaction but I thought it was funny. Then again, it takes a special person to want to move all those things across a river.
How can the boat not be able to hold a cabbage, a gun, and you, but it can hold a washing machine that takes two people to lift, and me?
